POSITION DETAILS

The Centro de Estudios Puertorriquenos/Center for Puerto Rican Studies is a university-based research institute housed at Hunter College, whose mission consists of two components. One is to collect, preserve and provide access to archival and library resources documenting the history and culture of Puerto Ricans. The other is to produce, facilitate, and disseminate interdisciplinary research about the diasporic experience of Puerto Ricans and to link this scholarly inquiry to social action and policy debates. The Director for Arts and Culture reports to the Sr. Center Director. This position plays a key role in developing and fundraising for Arts & Culture Programming and launching the new Centro Cultural Research Hub. Through its programmatic initiatives, the Centro Cultural Research Hub seeks to historicize, contextualize, incentivize, and showcase the socio-cultural contributions of Puerto Rico and its diaspora, foster the research use of Centro's arts and culture collections, and strengthen connections with the Puerto Rican artistic community.

 

Other Duties

The Director for Arts and Culture is responsible for the following:

  • Develop programming initiatives and fellowship opportunities in the realms of arts and culture.
  • Develop and implement innovative strategies for fundraising with individuals, corporations, and foundations to support arts and culture programming and literary initiatives.
  • Revamp and relaunch CENTRO's public and digital humanities platforms, including the CENTRO voices blog, e-journal, and newsletter.
  • Develop programming and publication initiatives based on CENTRO holding in collaboration with CENTRO staff in the library and archives.
  • Work with the cultural programming and outreach team to create synergy among arts and culture programming and initiatives, including exhibits, literary fairs, and virtual events.
  • Manage the development of new publications initiatives and marketing and outreach efforts for our arts, culture, and literary initiatives.
  • Partner with the CENTRO Operations team to update and maintain the CENTRO online store.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's Degree and eight years' related experience required; MLS degree and/or Master's in a related field may be substituted for a portion of the experience requirement.
  • Experience in the implementation of the responsibilities described above.
  • Advance degree in Arts and Culture Management or a related field.
  • Five to ten years of managerial experience in Arts Administration or a relevant field.
  • First-hand experience with editorial and publishing processes.
  • Direct experience in seeking and managing grant funding.
  • English and Spanish fluency are required.

 

VACCINE REQUIREMENT

Candidates will be required to provide proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 upon commencing employment. Exemption (medical or religious) requests to this requirement will be considered in accordance with applicable law. Being fully vaccinated is defined for this purpose as being at least two weeks past their final dose of an authorized COVID-19 vaccine regimen. Final candidates must be fully vaccinated as of their first day of employment.

  • Oversees an Art Center or Museum, promoting and directing programs and initiatives.
  • Works with senior management to create a vision and strategy for art/museum collection which fulfills the mission of the College
  • Develops, researches, curates and markets high quality exhibits; designs educational programs around exhibits such as lectures, films, learning aids and internships which relate to the College's curricula
  • Oversees the development and implementation of creative programming to attract both sponsors and audiences
  • Directs the administrative functions of the Center/Museum, including budget, archives, inventory, acquisitions, security and facilities; Presents reports on all operations consistent with best practices in the not-for-profit/public sectors
  • Establishes and cultivates community and cultural relationships and partnerships; participates in funding initiatives
  • Develops relationships between the Center/Museum and College academic and administrative departments
  • Hires, and manages Center/Museum staff
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

Salary commensurate with education and experience ($93,800 - $107,789)
