Overview

Program on Science and Global Security

Pre-Doctoral Research Fellowship in Science & Global Security

Princeton University's Program on Science and Global Security (SGS), based in the School of Public and International Affairs, is seeking applicants for two Pre-Doctoral Research Fellowships in Science & Global Security starting in the Fall of 2022 and no later than January 16, 2023. Fellows are hired as senior research specialists on a full-time, benefits-eligible basis for 12 months, with the possibility of extension for an additional year.

Responsibilities

This new fellowship program provides an opportunity for recent graduates, class of 2020 or after, to gain research training, mentoring and career development opportunities in the study of nuclear arms control, nonproliferation and disarmament that will prepare them for applications to PhD study in the Sciences, Engineering, or Public Affairs with a focus on global peace and security-related issues. It is funded by the Carnegie Corporation of New York and by the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs. Members of groups who contribute to Princeton University’s diversity—including members of groups that have been historically and are presently underrepresented in the United States (e.g., racial and ethnic minorities, individuals from first generation/low-income backgrounds, etc.) and those who have made active contributions to enhancing access, diversity, and inclusion in the sponsoring departments field—are especially encouraged to apply.

Fellows will work with a faculty or postdoctoral mentor to contribute to advancing the Program’s work on nuclear arms control, disarmament, nonproliferation, justice, and global security. Topics include reducing the risk of use of nuclear weapons, arms control, nonproliferation and disarmament verification, the security impacts of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, autonomous systems and quantum technologies, nuclear weapon effects modeling, and applying machine learning, data science and virtual and augmented reality to nuclear weapon policy issues.

Fellows will study and conduct guided research with a faculty or postdoctoral mentor, strengthen scientific, research and writing skills, participate in SGS-managed activities, training, and collaborative research and policy work, have opportunities to attend professional workshops and network with the technical and policy community. Fellows will also receive assistance with preparing and submitting PhD applications, and support to cover standard test and application fees.
