Position Description

The University Library at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for the position of University Archivist, which will serve under the direction of the Head of Special Collections and Archives. The position leads the development of the UC Santa Cruz University Archives collections and services, with the dual aim of curating the historical records of the campus and extending awareness and use of the collections. A priority for the position will be actively engaging with student organizations and groups to ensure the student experience is included broadly within the Archives. Additionally the University Archivist will establish strong relationships with administrative and academic partners within the Library, across campus, and in the UC system to ensure the proactive and systematic transfer of historical records. The scope of the collection includes historical materials, in any format, that document the history and functions of all areas of the UC Santa Cruz campus.

In collaboration with colleagues in the Processing Unit, the University Archivist will undertake the acquisition, arrangement, and description of archival collections that document all aspects of University history, including student life as well as the work of faculty and administration. The University Archivist will curate exhibits and develop curriculum-integrated programming and outreach focused on campus history with a particular focus on engaging with current students to document their experiences. As part of the Special Collections team, the University Archivist will participate in departmental instruction and reference programs, including serving a regular shift on the Special Collections Reference Desk and providing specialized community-centered research assistance and primary source literacy instruction.

In support of the above activities, the University Archivist will be assigned the following duties:
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate priorities and policies for retaining materials of permanent historical value to the campus;
  • Partner with students in documenting the student experience, providing mentorship and developing experiential learning opportunities;
  • Engage in outreach initiatives among students, faculty, administrators, alumni, and public user groups;
  • Work closely with the campus Records Manager to ensure that campus records of permanent value are appropriately retained;
  • Provide leadership, consultation, and outreach to campus units about responsibilities for historical records, both analog and digital, including web-archiving efforts;
  • Promote the use and understanding of University Archives to researchers, students, alumni, university personnel, and the public;
  • Collaborate with University Archivists at other UC campuses on system-wide university archives issues;
  • Participate and represent the UC Santa Cruz University Archives in appropriate archival, historical, or scholarly organizations.

To be eligible for consideration, applicants must meet the qualifications outlined in the Basic Qualifications section of this posting. In addition, applicants with any combination of the following preferred qualifications or experience are encouraged to apply:
  • Experience working with University Archives, preferably engaging with students and student organizations in this work;
  • Knowledge of strategies for and commitment to addressing diversity, equity, and inclusion issues in collection building;
  • Knowledge of efficient archival processing procedures and standards;
  • Knowledge of web-archiving;
  • Knowledge of standards for acquisition and preservation of born-digital materials;
  • Experience providing reference service, preferably in a research library or archives setting;
  • Experience working creatively, independently, and collegially in a diverse and dynamic academic community.

We are most interested in finding the best candidate for the job and recognize that the successful candidate may be one who comes from a less traditional background. We encourage you to apply, even if you don't meet all of the qualifications/experiences listed above.
