The Department of Civil and Systems Engineering (CaSE) at the Johns Hopkins University seeks applicants for a full-time teaching position (Lecturer) in the area of systems engineering. This position will serve a key role in the department’s new Bachelors, Masters, and PhD programs in Systems Engineering and the growing Center for Systems Science and Engineering (JHU CSSE). More experienced candidates may be considered for a Senior Lecturer position.

This is a career-oriented, renewable appointment that is responsible for the development and delivery of undergraduate and graduate courses to students majoring in Systems and/or Civil Engineering. Some potential areas for instruction include data sciences, optimization, network modeling, risk analysis, operations research, decision analytics, or courses at the intersection of foundational and applied systems engineering. Our curriculum aims to provide both fundamental and theoretical courses mixed with hands-on case studies motivated by real-world applications, including those related to Grand Societal Challenges identified by the department in areas of Resilient Cities, Future Energy Infrastructure, Decision-Making and Health, Human Safety and Security, and Space Exploration and Habitation. These characteristics of the department have made systems engineering at Johns Hopkins a unique and exciting program.

The successful candidate will be expected to help articulate the role of systems engineering in undergraduate and graduate education. Teaching faculty members are encouraged to engage in departmental and university service and may have advising responsibilities. In particular, this position is likely to include some advising of student groups and administrative responsibilities related to the coordination of the ABET accreditation process for systems engineering. Such activities will offset some of the teaching responsibilities of the position. The Whiting School of Engineering has a well-established non-tenure track career path for full-time teaching faculty culminating in the rank of Teaching Professor.

Applicants for the position must have a Ph.D. degree in Systems Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Operations Research, Applied Math, Computer Science, Civil Engineering or closely related fields. Related professional experience is considered a plus. Successful applicants must also have demonstrated excellence in, and commitment to, teaching, and have excellent communication skills.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
