Haverford's intentionally diverse curricular requirements ensure that

students are well-rounded, expansive thinkers. Students take courses

in each of three major academic divisions for a variety of ideas,

concepts, and intellectual approaches. Featuring 56 individual

programs focused on individual growth, Haverford offers specialized

majors, minors, and concentrations. 54% of the student population

faculty is noted for its strength in both scholarship and teaching, and

standards. The faculty members are teaching at an undergraduate

college of arts and sciences by choice and they expect to learn, as well

Haverford students and graduates are extremely successful. They are

In his 1918 book about Haverford College, its then President Isaac Sharpless described

its unique standing among higher education institutions: “The purpose is to make the

whole Haverford family, managers, alumni, faculty, and undergraduates, a loyal and

interested democracy. It is on such a platform that our small college has been

standing...and it has no intention of following the well-meant advice of its larger

brethren to close its doors or change its general policy.”

institution of higher learning. Particularly in the case of Haverford alumni, we view their

relationships with the College and their fellow alumni as lifelong and strive to enrich

them through different engagement and volunteer opportunities.

At Haverford, this is an exciting time. We are in the midst of developing a new strategic

plan that will position the College for its next decade and lead up to its 200th

anniversary (Haverford was founded in 1833). Expecting to conclude in the next six

months, this collaborative community-wide effort will set the institutional aspirations

and priorities that will inform our next comprehensive campaign. In tandem with the

development of Haverford’s new strategic plan, Institutional Advancement has created

a data-informed multi-year and multifaceted plan that undergirds growing the Division,

recalibrating several departments, adding new functions, and preparing for a robust

campaign. Over the next two years, Institutional Advancement will expand its staffing

between 25-40%, across multiple areas (Philanthropy, Alumni and Constituent

Engagement, Advancement Operations, and Charitable Gift Planning), and at all levels of

its operations, such as Advancement Communications, Volunteer Recruitment and

Development, Principal Gifts, and Analytics and Predictive Modeling. We seek

enthusiastic, high-caliber professionals to join our existing team of excellent colleagues

and help propel Haverford forward through the launch of our comprehensive campaign

and fulfillment of Institutional Advancement’s multi-year and multifaceted plan.

Institutional Advancement is being led by Ara Serjoie who has served as Vice President

since August 2021. His 28-year career has spanned higher education, youth

development, and health care. Ara lived in Tehran, West Berlin, and London before

moving to the United States to pursue a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts and sciences

from Utah State University. He holds a master’s in public administration from the

University of Utah with an emphasis in nonprofit leadership and earned his Ph.D. in

higher education leadership and human resource studies at Colorado State University.

The Director of Prospect Research and Management provides accurate and

actionable information on potential benefactors through prospect identification,

qualification, and moves management for the Institutional Advancement team at

Haverford College. This role plays a critical role in ensuring the benefactor pipeline

remains dynamic and current across Institutional Advancement.

Position Overview Director of Prospect Research and Management

The Director of Prospect Research and Management is responsible for implementing

a comprehensive prospect research identification and qualification program and an

effective prospect management program at Haverford College. This position will

ensure the success of Institutional Advancement (IA)’s annual goals and priorities,

especially for the upcoming comprehensive campaign, and as the College approaches

its bicentennial in 2033. This role will be supported by an Associate Director of

Prospect Research and Management.

Reporting to the Assistant Vice President for Advancement Operations, the Director

will collaborate with colleagues across IA to cultivate an optimal prospect pool. The

Director will lead and execute strategies to assist leadership and gift officers in

executing a moves management/prospect development system. In this role, the

Director will seek out and maintain positive relationships with IA staff and share in

the mission of Haverford. A prime objective of this position is fostering a more robust

and viable prospect pool for the IA team.

A portion of the Director’s responsibilities can be managed remotely, but will require

time on-campus for meetings with IA/campus partners and IA events.

Job Summary

• Manage all prospect research assignments requested by the Haverford College IA

team

• Create and implement a moves management/prospect development system for

IA

• Institute a proactive prospect identification and assignment program for

leadership and gift officers, aligned with campaign priorities and department

goals

• Track and report on prospect research and management activity for IA leadership

and staff

• Collaborate with colleagues across Advancement Operations to bolster and

maintain data in Raiser’s Edge; serve as a thought leader on data integrity

• Manage College resources responsibly and effectively with team; manage

research resource acquisition and access

• Align team’s planning and priorities with the College’s campaign goals and

strategic plan

• Contribute to a culture of best fundraising practices in Institutional Advancement

and building a culture of philanthropy at Haverford

• Direct and supervise the Associate Director of Prospect Research and

Management; manage student worker(s) if necessary

Major Primary Responsibilities

• Establish a comprehensive prospect research program that identifies

recommends prospects for Haverford College

• Provide quantitative and qualitative analysis of pipeline activity and movement to

drive strategic planning across Advancement, including predictive modeling

• Creates moves management practices and framework that ensures dynamic

movement of prospects and benefactors through the donor cycle

• Represent Institutional Advancement on program, institutional, and search

committees, especially as they pertain to foundation and donor-funded efforts.

• Collaborate with the AVP of Advancement Operations in implementing best

practices in the field of prospect research and management, and in developing a

culture of philanthropy at Haverford community

• Participate in conferences and meetings for professional development and

networking with peer colleagues

• Collaborate with other Institutional Advancement staff on activities that intersect

with individual prospect work

• In service of Institutional Advancement’s DEI goal, contribute to the development

and cultivation of a welcoming and inclusive environment where all professionals

can be successful

Essential Functions & Primary Responsibilities

• Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred

• At least ten years of progressively responsible and relevant experience in a

professional environment, preferably in academic or non-profit fundraising

role(s)

o Experience collaborating with leadership and gift officers to develop and

maintain prospect pools

o An appreciation for the liberal arts and its potential to develop the fullest

expression of individual identity and contribution to community is

desired

• Demonstrated thoughtful/collaborative project management skills

• Highly organized and needing minimal direction to complete complex tasks

• Program, staff, and volunteer management experience preferred

• Strong organizational and interpersonal abilities

• Skill in dealing with people, diplomacy, tact, discretion, and the ability to

maintain confidentiality

• Superior written and oral communication skills, creativity and demonstrated

success in managing multiple projects

• Computer literacy, including familiarity with Microsoft Office, Google Drive,

Raiser’s Edge (or other fundraising databases)

Education, Training, & Experience

The Director of Prospect Research and Management reports to the Assistant Vice

President of Advancement Operations.

All faculty and staff (including contract workers) who are employed or engaged by

Haverford College, must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (to include a booster

dose when eligible), and provide proof of vaccination, unless an exemption from this

policy has been granted as an accommodation or otherwise.

This status determines for the identification, treatment of time, and use of

“Essential Personnel” during campus emergencies, including those that dictate
