Job Description

The Publicity Coordinator (PC) is responsible for planning and implementing marketing and publicity strategies for select books. This includes identifying academic and trade markets, and soliciting reviews from print, broadcast, and online media. The PC communicates directly with authors, book buyers, sales representatives, and media representatives. This position also manages author events, book exhibits, advertising, and awards submissions. The successful candidate will have excellent verbal and written communication skills and a strong proficiency using Microsoft Office, social media platforms, and WordPress. A key member of the press’ marketing team, this position works collaboratively with press colleagues across departments as well as the wider University community.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, English, or related field.
  • 2-3 years of experience in publicity, public relations, or marketing position, preferably with a scholarly or trade book publisher.

  • Ability to communicate clearly, accurately, and effectively both in writing and verbally.
  • Excellent organizational skills: proven ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Understanding of academic and general-interest audiences.
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office, social media platforms, and WordPress.
Responsibilities

Marketing:
  • Identify the most appropriate audience for specific academic and trade books.
  • Develop targeted marketing strategy for each book.
  • Write catalog descriptions, press releases, social media posts, and copy for other promotional materials as needed.
  • Identity appropriate awards for specific titles and manage the submission process.

Events:
  • Organize and promote in-person and virtual author events and book launches.
  • Organize conference attendance, reserve exhibit booth, and manage the shipment of books and marketing materials.
  • Coordinate author events on campus.
  • Attend select academic conferences, author events, and trade shows.

Communication:
  • Interact verbally and in writing with a variety of authors, book buyers, and media representatives.
  • Present new titles to sales representatives and national/local media contacts.
  • Provide input on appropriate positioning of new titles at transmittal and cover meetings.

Publicity:
  • Soliciting reviews and features from established and new print, broadcast, and online media.
  • Promote front and back list titles on social media.
  • Develop and maintain a monthly schedule of social media posts.
  • Send review copies and galleys to media contacts.

Title Management:
  • Maintain accurate marketing metadata in the title management system.
  • Review daily reports to monitor changes in publication dates.
  • Update title management system with reviews, awards, and event information.
  • Maintain accurate title metadata in vendors’ databases.
