The University of Montana invites applications for an Associate Director of Experiential Learning to fulfill the unit’s strategic goal of ElevateU, which is the university’s signature career readiness program. This position is a leadership role managing policies, procedures, and programming for experiential learning. The Associate Director of Experiential Learning (AD-EL) will participate in strategic planning initiatives, problem solving, and works with a high degree of initiative to research, assess, and oversee experiential learning and employer engagement. This position is key in developing and promoting experiential learning opportunities and employer events on campus and in the community working with a wide variety of stakeholders and partners.

Position duties include six main areas, but are not limited to:

  1. Internships- this individual will perform employer outreach and serve as the campus lead for internship systems and supports including Grad Leaders, Handshake, employer/faculty training and student engagement in support of internship experiences. This person will engage with faculty, staff, faculty governance groups, the Registrar’s Office, Data Office, and Financial Aid to develop and sustain internships and other high impact experiential learning activities.
  2. Data- The AD-EL will work with UM’s Data Office to research, track and implement systems to assess impacts of experiential learning on student success. This work is conducted throughout the year and supports delivery of data for annual reports and campus strategic initiatives.
  3. Marketing/Outreach- The candidate oversees external communications and outreach materials to advertise and promote experiential learning and career success. This includes print and web-based materials, website oversite and social media oversight. This position will support ELCS events and conduct student group and class presentations.
  4. Budget- The AD-EL will work closely with the ED and finance manager to oversee JLD and Career Events budgets and makes recommendations for the unit’s funding decisions and priorities. This position co-chairs UM’s Experiential Learning Scholarship Fund managing the allocation of student scholarships for experiential learning.
  5. DEI- This position works to advance diversity, equity and inclusion in experiential learning and career readiness by empowering all students to participate in experiential learning, engaging and serving underserved academic units and historically marginalized students. This person will work to create inclusive, student-centered programs and professional pathways for all.
  6. Technology and Systems- The AD-El will engage in a variety of systems and platforms to support experiential learning and data tracking such as EAB Navigate, Handshake, Grad Leaders, Zoom, Moodle, Microsoft Office, micro-internships (Parker-Dewey) and Emsi.

Position Details
  • Position is full-time, 1.0 FTE, Letter of Appointment and includes a comprehensive and competitive benefits package including Insurance package, mandatory retirement plan, partial tuition waiver, and wellness program.
  • Salary for this position is a range from $53,000 to $55,000 per year commensurate with qualifications.
Required Qualifications
  • Master’s degree and at least five (5) years’ experience in higher education experiential learning, High Impact Practices, student success, or closely related field or a equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Expertise developing and delivering presentations and workshops on experiential learning, and/or student success to undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Knowledge of High Impact Practices and student success strategies and programming. Skill administering/interpreting assessments: MBTI, Strong, 16Personalities, High5, CliftonStrengths, Holland Code.
  • Success leading and supervising teams to design and execute career readiness programs, services, and presentations.
  • Demonstrated success managing conflict and stressful, challenging situations (and people) while maintaining composure, diplomacy, and confidentiality demonstrating positive verbal and written communications.
  • Success working cooperatively to foster collaboration with diverse student populations, communities, and constituencies embracing differences and encouraging authenticity, inclusion, diversity, and equity.
  • Demonstrated successful supervisory, leadership, and management skills.
  • Understanding of data collection, analysis, and interpretation for reporting and programming implementation.
  • Paramount characteristics: agility and professional judgment, acting independently and equitably with integrity and accountability to self and others; dedication to student development; critical thinking and task follow-through.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Expertise in experiential learning and High Impact Practices as demonstrated by publications, presentations, industry thought-leadership, and/or recognition of excellence.
  • Broad knowledge of post-secondary programs and disciplines.
  • Experience interpreting and applying university policies and procedures to project a positive image to students, parents, campus, and community.
  • Superior written and verbal skills to strategize, create, and communicate vision and inspire action. Strong communication, time management, and organizational skills.
