Job Description

The Assistant Director for Professional Development, within the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL), will work with the Director of Professional Development to provide professional development designed to empower and support Virginia Tech faculty to become effective and innovative educators focused on student learning and success. The Assistant Director’s responsibilities will include: (a) developing and managing professional development programs designed to improve teaching and learning practices; (b) conducting research-based services to provide formative feedback for faculty development; (c) developing and managing professional development activities supporting new and early career faculty teaching; (d) developing teaching and learning resources to support best practices; (e) supporting the overall mission of CETL by collaborating on programs for evidence-based educational practices; (f) serving on university committees, task forces, and other groups as an advocate for evidence-based, inclusive teaching and learning practices; and, function in a year round (CY) academic program planning and management capacity.

Required Qualifications

1. An earned master’s degree or doctorate by time of appointment;
2. Experience teaching as in instructor of record at the university level;
3. Knowledge of multiple and varied instructional strategies and their application in the higher education classroom;
3. Demonstrated expertise in research-based approaches to inclusive teaching;
4. Experience leading teaching and learning professional development;
6. Evidence of the ability to communicate effectively across a range of stakeholders, including faculty members, staff, administrators, students and external agencies.

Preferred Qualifications

1. Experience developing and implementing new faculty development workshops, certificates, seminars, and/or initiatives.
2. Experience with qualitative data analysis to inform programs and practices.
3. Experience with large course instruction.
4. Evidence of expertise in written, spoken and/or visual communications; and,
5. Evidence of the ability to work in a collaborative atmosphere.
