Job Description

The Professional Development Director, within the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL), will work with the Associate Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning and Director of CETL to provide university-wide leadership for professional development designed to empower and support Virginia Tech faculty to become effective and innovative educators focused on student learning and success. The Director will provide programs and services to support faculty across all levels of teaching proficiency. As a leader in CETL, the Director will manage projects and programs to promote innovation, adapting to meet the teaching and learning needs of Virginia Tech faculty and students. The Director will develop and maintain key learning partnerships to enhance and elevate teaching excellence.

The Director’s responsibilities will include:
1. Providing a comprehensive system for supporting faculty with the knowledge, skills, and tools to design learning with inclusive, research-based pedagogies;
2. Designing, developing, implementing, and evaluating professional development programs focused on advancing faculty members’ understanding, application, and implementation of effective, evidence-based educational practices;
3. Providing high-quality certificate programs meeting the support needs of faculty across varying levels of teaching proficiency;
4. Managing formative instructional evaluations and peer reviews for individual faculty;
5. Effectively supervising direct reports to facilitate a collaborative and productive work environment;
6. Supporting the overall vision and mission of CETL through project leadership and support for high-quality, evidence-based teaching and learning;
7. Leading and serving on various university committees, task forces, and other groups focused on teaching and learning advocating for best practices in inclusive faculty development and support; and, function in a year-round (CY) academic program planning and management capacity.

Required Qualifications

1. An earned doctorate by time of appointment;
2. Experience teaching as in instructor of record at the university level;
3. Demonstrated expertise in research-based approaches to inclusive teaching and course design;
4. Experience leading teaching and learning professional development;
5. Experience supporting adult learners to apply essential principles of student learning and development in higher education;
6. Evidence of the ability to communicate effectively across a range of stakeholders, including faculty members, staff, administrators, students and external agencies.

Preferred Qualifications

1. Experience developing and implementing new faculty development workshops, certificates, seminars, and/or initiatives.
2. Experience designing, developing and leading university-wide professional development activities;
3. Experience working on a university-wide strategic initiative;
4. Experience with program-level student learning outcomes assessment for continuous improvement.
5. Experience at a large, research institution.
6. Evidence of expertise in written, spoken and/or visual communications; and,
7. Evidence of the ability to work in a collaborative atmosphere.
