Primary Purpose of Position:
North Carolina Central University (NCCU) is currently seeking an experienced, visionary, entrepreneurial, innovative and student-centered leader to serve at the Dean of University College. The Dean of University College will serve as the chief academic leader responsible for advancing student success and retention efforts for all lower-division students and students who have not declared a major. The University College promotes student learning and development by providing coordinated and centralized academic resources and support services to assist first year and second year students to define their educational and career goals and establish the blueprint for their success. The Dean of University College will have oversight of undergraduate academic advising, academic coaching and peer mentoring. Additionally, the dean will provide a significant leadership role in the development, operation, and coordinated activities related to student retention and success.

Reporting directly to the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, with a dotted line to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Enrollment Management, the Dean will serve as the chief academic officer for the College and is responsible for establishing the strategic vision and goals of this important unit. Additionally, the Dean will provide administrative oversight for all aspects of the college that include, fiscal management, personnel professional development, the executive of academic services to support student success and retention. The Dean will also have responsibilities for external initiatives that include community outreach, fundraising, and other duties as assigned.



Minimum Education/Experience:
A terminal degree is required (Ed.D, Ph.D, JD, etc.) from an accredited institution.

Experience: A minimum of three years (at the Director, Associate/Assistant Dean, Department Chair, or Dean level) successful administrative experience or demonstrated leadership experience related to the duties of the position.· A minimum of three years of experience with retention and student success initiatives.· Administrative experience such as department chair or program coordinator.· Demonstrates a record of success in leading undergraduate teaching, mentoring, retention and program instruction.· Demonstrates success of leading and managing a large unit.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Demonstrated leadership and ability to work effectively and collegially with University administrators, faculty, staff and students. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required. Effective interpersonal skills and sensitivity to issues affecting a wide range of constituencies are required. Experience in budget, financial, and personnel management is required. The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required. This position also requires a demonstrated commitment to high quality special programs and education and an understanding of federal and state legislation and campus compliance issues.
