Position Summary

Governors State University (University Park, IL) is inviting applications for a full time, non-tenure track Visiting Assistant Professor in Anthropology, to begin in the Fall 2023 semester. This position is a 12-month contract with a teaching load of 27 credit hours (9 courses) over Fall 2023, Spring 2024, and Summer 2024. This is a one-year appointment with the possibility of renewal for one additional year.

The ideal candidate has outstanding teaching skills, evidence of—or potential for—a prominent record of scholarship, as well as service to the institution, discipline, and/or community. A successful candidate is a teacher/scholar with teaching and research expertise in anthropology or related field, specifically a generalist with the ability to teach required courses for the Anthropology and Sociology ( ANSO ) major from a qualitative and/or mixed methodology approach, including Qualitative Methods; Environmental Justice; and/or Social Inequalities. Required courses also include general education courses, which include Intro to Cultural Anthropology; Ecology, Environment, and Culture; Race and Class; Food, Culture, and Society; and/or Theories of Social Science. While most courses will be taught in-person at our University Park campus, the ideal candidate should have experience teaching online courses and interpersonal skills to collaborate on the newly created online Bachelor of Arts degree in Anthropology and Sociology.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Ph.D. degree in Anthropology or a closely related discipline; ABD in the final stages of completion will also be considered.
2. Knowledge and ability to teach undergraduate courses in anthropology, and the social sciences more broadly.
3. Documented record of ability to make intellectual contributions through scholarly publications/presentations.
4. Ability to complement the program’s strengths.

Preferred Qualifications

1. Experience with first-generation, culturally diverse, and non-traditional students.
2. Demonstrated ability to integrate their scholarship in the undergraduate courses of the major.
3. Experience teaching qualitative and/or mixed-methods research methods and analysis.
4. Evidence of teaching excellence in both classroom and online learning environments.
5. Fluency in a language other than English; Spanish or Arabic preferred.
