Job Description:

St. Thomas University College of Law is seeking a Director of Private Sector for its Office for Career Development. The Director advises students and alumni on all legal careers, including firms, corporations, and other JD Advantage positions. The Director provides comprehensive career and professional development services for students and alumni of St. Thomas Law. The Director provides professional development counseling to students and alumni through individual counseling and group programs. Specifically, the Director advises and encourages students as they explore various career opportunities, including preparing them for potential challenges; and helps students create successful plans for their future employment which includes reviewing their resumes, cover letters and other employment application materials, and conducting mock interviews. The Director assists alumni in transitioning into lateral or vertical career moves. The Director creates employment opportunities by promoting job fairs, workshops, and mentoring programs; coordinates on-campus events such as Lunch & Learns; assists faculty and staff by planning and organizing programs on varying career-related topics; and collaborates with law student organizations on career-related initiatives. The Director attends regular networking events and will be the main liaison between private firms and corporations.

Job Requirements:

J.D. degree from an ABA accredited law school is required, as well as a minimum of 5 years private practice or Judicial Clerkship experience; and be in good standing with the Florida bar or another state bar. Knowledge of legal employers (primarily, but not limited to, in-state legal employers) and their hiring needs. Understanding of methods and procedures for seeking professional legal employment. Ability to communicate with students on a one-to-one basis, helping them identify their professional and personal strengths, encouraging them to apply and interview with a variety of legal employers, and helping them remain positive and upbeat throughout the job search process. Skill in event planning and promotion. Ability to introduce panel members, encourage students to ask questions, and keep workshop on track. Superior interpersonal, communication, counseling, and presentation skills. Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills are needed. Strong time management and organizational skills. Ability to work effectively with frequent interruptions and changing priorities. Highest ethical and professional standards and proven ability to exercise exemplary judgment when dealing with sensitive information and difficult situations. Must be willing/able to work some evenings and weekends.

Tuition Benefit

After 1 year of continuous full‐time service, employees are eligible to enroll in STU’s bachelor and master courses, tuition‐free. The program will cover a maximum timeframe of 125% of credit hours attempted toward the degree program. Employees may enroll in STU’s doctoral program, with a 40% tuition discount, under the same conditions.
