The Opportunity

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Colorado School of Mines (Mines) invites applications for a tenure/tenure-track position in construction engineering open at all ranks (Assistant, Associate, Full Professor).

The successful candidate will be expected to engage in undergraduate and graduate teaching, develop an externally funded research program in their technical area, contribute to professional leadership and service, and contribute to the diversity and inclusive excellence of our academic community. The typical effort distribution for tenure-track faculty is 40% teaching, 40% research, and 20% service. A PhD is required at the time of hire.

Research areas of interest include those that fall within the broad scope of construction engineering, with emphasis on heavy civil infrastructure construction, underground civil infrastructure construction, and energy infrastructure construction. Preferred research areas include those focused on virtual design and construction, digital construction - including construction information monitoring (CIM) and digital twinning, as well as related technologies for construction sensing, monitoring and automation. Responsibilities

The successful candidate will teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels, supervise graduate research and thesis projects, establish and grow a quality publication record, and develop a strong externally funded program that supports applied and/or fundamental research. Teaching responsibilities will ideally include undergraduate construction engineering course topics and graduate courses in the candidate’s area of specialty.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Ph.D. from an accredited program in civil/construction engineering or a closely related field by the time the appointment begins.
  • Record of publication at top-tier international conferences and/or journals in one or more of the search areas.
  • Commitment to excellence in teaching and curriculum development at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Demonstrated understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion issues in higher education and a commitment to addressing these issues through concrete action.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Assistant Professor candidates must demonstrate the potential for excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service.
  • Associate and Full Professor candidates must have an established and currently-funded program with clear potential for continuance, and a proven track record of success in teaching, research, and service. In addition, Full Professor candidates should have an established international reputation.
  • Evidence of externally funded research is required for an appointment with tenure.

Department Description

The department is expanding to incorporate the newly-formed BSc in Construction Engineering. Currently, the Department has 27 faculty members, with 9 teaching professors and 18 full-time tenured/tenure track professors. We are also the academic home to the President and Dean. We currently have 3 departmental staff members who support the mission of our department. This cadre of professionals services over 500 undergraduate majors (343 BS Civil Engineering and 172 Environmental Engineering) and 119 graduate students (18% MS Thesis, 43% MS non-thesis, 38% PhD). At the graduate level, we offer two MSc and PhD degrees (Civil & Environmental Engineering; Environmental Engineering Science) and support three interdisciplinary graduate degree programs in Hydrologic Science & Engineering, Underground Construction & Tunnel Engineering, and Humanitarian Engineering & Science. Our highly accomplished faculty are internationally recognized in the areas of environmental engineering and science, geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, underground construction engineering, and water resources engineering. Our research activity is very high, typically among the top three departments on campus for annual expenditures.

Pay Range

Assistant Professor: $94,400 - $96,00
Associate Professor: $108,000 - $111,000
Professor: $140,000 - $159,000

Mines takes into consideration a combination of candidate’s education, training and experience as well as the position’s scope and complexity, the discretion and latitude required in the role, work location, and external market and internal value when determining a salary level for potential new employees.
