Search for the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs
University of Dayton
Dayton, Ohio

University of Dayton (UD) seeks a strategic, collaborative, and innovative leader to serve as Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs (Provost/EVP). Joining a dynamic and highly motivated President and leadership team, the Provost/EVP will help lead a well-positioned university into an exciting new era of prominence, building on its many strengths, including its distinctive Catholic, Marianist tradition, a genuinely caring community, mission-driven students, faculty and staff, and strong links with the city of Dayton and partnerships throughout the state of Ohio.

UD is recognized as a top ten Catholic institution of higher learning and a top tier Catholic research university. It is also one of the nation's largest Catholic universities and the largest private university in Ohio. The University comprises six academic units: the College of Arts and Sciences and the Schools of Business Administration, Education and Health Sciences, Engineering, Law, and University Libraries. In FY 2022, UD attracted over $220 million in sponsored research and is classified as "R2: High research activity" by the Carnegie Classification. The University of Dayton Research Institute (UDRI), an integrated, staff-driven research organization, has more than 785 staff members and accounts for 95% of this research. UD currently serves approximately 11,770 students, including more than 8,133 full-time undergraduates and 3,327 graduate and law students. Over 654 full-time faculty and 340 part-time faculty teach and engage in groundbreaking research, scholarship, and creative works at the University. Embedded in the dynamic city of Dayton and grounded in its Catholic, Marianist tradition, UD instills a strong commitment to community within students and strives to be a university dedicated to the common good.

The Provost/EVP will be joining a university that is committed to the common good and is deeply rooted in its mission and values. Under President Eric F. Spina's leadership, UD has experienced substantial growth in enrollment, research expenditures, and philanthropic support and strengthened its commitment to student access and success. In the first-year entering class in August 2022, nearly 20 percent of the students are domestic students of color and 16 percent are Pell eligible, both at or near all-time highs. The six-year graduation rate for undergraduate students is 81 percent, and the retention rate for first to second year students is 88 percent, which stay well above the national average and remain points of pride for the University. The strategic vision has also prompted four of the five strongest years of philanthropic support in the University's history, with a promising campaign poised to go public in Spring 2023.

The Provost/EVP will provide strategic direction to enhance UD's academic distinctiveness by strengthening the links between students' academic success and overall well-being and continuing to deliver on the promise of its Catholic, Marianist educational roots to develop the whole person. As the chief academic officer with oversight of the academic budget, the Provost/EVP will work closely with the President, the Executive Vice President for Business and Administrative Services, and other senior leaders to ensure a sound financial strategy directly linked to the priorities of the University. The successful candidate will have extensive experience balancing a complex university's business fundamentals while prioritizing student success, academic excellence, community engagement, and diversity, equity, and inclusion. Of greatest importance is a leadership style that strongly emphasizes interpersonal connections, communication, accessibility, collaboration, and decisiveness, all of which are critical to leading the University of Dayton during a time of growth and change for higher education.

The next Provost/EVP will work with the President, Board of Trustees, Executive Vice President for Business and Administrative Services, Vice Presidents, Deans, Academic Senate, students, faculty, staff, and the external community to help the University remain competitive in the current dynamic higher education landscape by addressing the following key opportunities and challenges:

  • Further develop a shared academic vision that values broad-based undergraduate education, selective graduate excellence, and research and that celebrates Catholic intellectual traditions
  • Sharpen the value proposition of a transformational, relationship-rich UD undergraduate student experience
  • Ensure the highest quality in UD's graduate programs that are central to the University's mission
  • Continue to pursue academic excellence and promote cross-disciplinary collaboration
  • Embrace shared governance and the UD culture of dialogue, mutual respect, and transparency grounded in Marianist community ideals
  • Encourage innovation and creativity while ensuring effective allocation of resources and financial sustainability
  • Work with the Vice President for Mission and Rector to ensure that the University's educational mission remains rooted in the Marianist charism
  • Shepherd and strengthen UD's community partnerships in the city of Dayton, the southwestern Ohio region, and beyond
