Director of Research Development

About the Opportunity

Summary & Responsibilities:Research is a high-profile area of growth within the university, nearly tripling in funding in the past decade to $125M university wide, with a 5-year goal of $200M. As part of that growth target, Northeastern seeks to leverage its global campus network to build new research partnerships, hire new research staff, and bring research funding to the university through those efforts.

Reporting to the Dean of the Seattle Campus, the Director of Research Development will collaborate with faculty across the global campus network, college leadership teams, University research development staff, and campus leadership to build large-scale research initiatives that advance the reputation, impact and external profile of the University.

Specific areas of focus include, but are not limited to:
1. Strategic planning to facilitate Seattle faculty pursuit of research grants, including promotion of research opportunities and streamlining of the grant application process;
2. Creation of faculty professional development programs, including group trainings and one-on-one coaching for enhanced faculty capability;
3. Support (both strategic and tactical) of internal funding programs and large-scale internal/external research initiatives that are potential “game-changers” to grow the Seattle campus' reputation and research volume.
4. Tracking of research impact and products, and support efforts to promote and maximize research impact internally and externally.

The Director uses their knowledge of the academic enterprise, the Seattle research landscape, the current research funding environment, faculty expertise areas in the campus and university, and development and advancement priorities to envision and develop programs, pre-proposals/proposals, white papers, and other research communications that enhance the campus research environment. The Director draws on their superb organizational and interpersonal skills, creative and professional writing and presentation abilities, and a strong interest in cutting edge engineering and technology topics to bring teams together as needed for synergistic activities and projects.Qualifications:

| PhD preferred, Master's degree required with 10+ years of research development experience in a higher education and/or research institution settings; | Experience planning, organizing, and writing grant proposals for NSF, DoD, NIH, and/or foundations. | Highest level English writing and editing skill, with the demonstrated ability to write on technical topics and translate research for a range of audiences, using correct grammar, punctuation, spelling, editing, formatting, and proofreading. | Outstanding information visualization skills, to conceive of and design images that convey key programmatic messages. | Demonstrated success in using analytical, judgment and problem-solving skills to determine needs and arrive at consistently sound conclusions. | Demonstrated research, data gathering and interview skills to compose effective written materials. | Organizational experience, preferably organizing teams of faculty as well as skill in implementing systems in a large, bureaucratic, multi-department environment. | Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative SuiteThe expected hiring range for this position is USD $85,725 to USD $128,220, based upon the position's scope and responsibilities.
