VCU Safety & Risk Management has an exciting opportunity for an Occupational Safety Compliance Specialist!

Position Summary/Overview:

As an important member of the Safety and Risk Management team, the Occupational Safety Compliance Specialist role will increase safety, health, and wellness for university employees by identifying hazards, investigating accidents or concerns and
documenting controls. The Occupational Safety Compliance Specialist works with related departments and units to improve employee health and safety including: Employee Health Services, Human Resources, Occupational Health, Risk and Insurance, Facilities Management, VCU Police, the Office of the Vice President for Research Innovation (OVPRI), etc. Other duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

● Collect and analyze data on accidents and injuries to employees resulting from workplace accidents to direct programs aimed at reducing injuries and improving employee health.
● Manage federal, state, local and other laws, regulations and guidelines with respect to occupational safety matters for the university.
● Manage record keeping and data bases as required by authorities having jurisdiction as well as the university.
● Audit and inspect campus workplace to identify risks, perform job hazard analysis and follow up using identified best practices to document risk mitigation.
● Create and deliver occupational safety training programs.
● Proactively assist individual departments in VCU to develop and implement customized safety programs and training efforts.
● Maintain a current knowledge of new and changing occupational safety regulations and standards in an effort to educate, maintain and/or ensure compliance throughout VCU.
● Implement and audit occupational safety programs including but not limited to; accident prevention, lock out/tag out, personal protective equipment, ergonomics, electrical safety, confined space entry and fall protection.
● Conduct life and occupational safety building inspections for campus buildings, residential halls and Facilities Management maintenance shops.
● Conduct Fit-testing for hospital and university staff as needed.
● Conduct employee accident investigations across the university and participate in emergency response activities.
● Ensure emergency eyewash and shower safety equipment is inspected and tested across the university.
● Review emergency actions plans for occupants of buildings across the university

Minimum Qualifications

● Bachelor’s degree in the sciences or equivalent experience.
● 1-2 years experience in Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Industrial Engineering, Safety Engineering, Fire Safety or related field.
● Knowledge and experience with Occupational Safety and Health (OSHA) General Industry Standards and fire
and life safety code.
● Excellent communication and organizational skills.
● Ability to work independently and occasionally work off hours for required training purposes.
● Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.

Preferred Qualifications:

● Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Fire Science, related field.
● 2-5 years experience in Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Industrial Engineering, Safety Engineering, Fire Safety or related field.

Salary Range: $45,000 - $55,000
