    SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY:

    Under the direction and supervision of the VP Student Engagement and Campus Life, the Director of Residence Life will ensure a seamless student experience and address the needs of both undergraduate and graduate resident students as part of the Kentucky State University community. Utilizing data-informed analyses and developing partnerships with key departments, the Director of Residence Life will be responsible for the design and implementation of a strategic residential and student life master plan and budgeting model. Additionally, the Director will work with Academic Affairs to create and implement vibrant, co-curricular programs and living-learning communities throughout the residential facilities. The incumbent will be responsible for the coordination and strategic development of student-centered programs and services that will promote spirit and pride within the campus community. The Director will support initiatives that enhance student success by connecting students to civic engagement experiences.

    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Provide leadership and vision for the development, implementation, and assessment of a comprehensive student engagement and leadership development strategy, which includes key outcome measures for the quality of student life and learning beyond the classroom;
  • Develop a comprehensive, strategic, and predictive model for housing occupancy and operations;
  • Supervise Residence and Student Life staff and coordinate administrative operations;
  • Ensure effective planning and continuous assessment of activities to evaluate and strengthen community building and meaningful student engagement within residence and campus life;
  • Develop, coordinate, and implement a multifaceted leadership program that supports leadership development, engagement, training, and education of students, student organizations, and advisors. Components include creating a leadership certificate program, emerging leader series, peer mentor program, and leadership opportunities for students;
  • Assist and mentor students in forming and maintaining student organizations; • Coordinate diversity and awareness initiatives and programming and support student initiatives and development in these areas;
  • Work closely with Academic Affairs and External Relations, offices encompassed by these divisions, Facilities and Maintenance, and Campus Police Department to ensure effective coordination with related housing operations and student life events;
  • Collaborate with key staff and faculty to increase student retention through the implementation of best practices;
  • Serve as an instructor for University Orientation and/or KSU Orientation course(s);
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of the new and transfer student orientation programs;
  • Oversees student programs that maintain and enhance the quality of on-campus residence life; directs area residence life officers and student resident advisors, and develops and/or monitors educational, recreational, and/or social programs and services for student residents;
  • Interacts with students as a resource person and advisor;
  • Develops and directs department activities in the areas of crisis management, mediation and dispute resolution, and/or student discipline;
  • Reviews student resident appeals including contract terminations;
  • Directs department crisis management program;
  • Develops and manages annual budgets for the organization and performs periodic cost and productivity analyses;
  • Oversees the overall operations of unit(s) reporting to this position;
  • Represents the University to various institutional divisions, students, and/or the general public/local community;
  • Recommends and participates in the development of University policies and procedures; may serve on university planning and policy-making committees;
  • Plans, develops, and implements strategies for generating resources and/or revenues for the organization;
  • Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master's degree in higher education, student affairs administration, college student personnel/counseling, or equivalent;
  • Minimum five (5) years of progressively responsible student affairs management in a university environment with experience in housing/residential life, leadership development, and student activities and programming; • Minimum three (3) years of supervisory experience;
  • Knowledge of student development theory, program development, management and leadership education, staff training/development, and student advisement;
  • Proven experience in student crisis management and emergency response.

  • Demonstrated commitment to working with a diverse and inclusive student body, faculty, and staff; • Strong project and program management and evaluation skills;
  • Demonstrated strong public speaking and presentation skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills;
  • Ability to establish and maintain collaborative relationships with students, faculty, and staff;
  • Strong technology skills including proficiency in web-based software systems.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
  • No or very limited physical effort required.
  • No or very limited exposure to physical
