Job Details

As a community, the University of Rochester is defined by a deep commitment to Meliora - Ever Better. Embedded in that ideal are the values we share: equity, leadership, integrity, openness, respect, and accountability. Together, we will set the highest standards for how we treat each other to ensure our community is welcoming to all and is a place where all can thrive.

To support our mission of Learn, Discover, Heal, Create, the University of Rochester is seeking a Vice President for Research to lead the University's research mission and initiatives. The Vice President for Research will further the collaborations that have contributed to the University's research successes locally, nationally and globally.

The successful Vice President for Research will bring a vision for what is possible for research activity at the University, recognizing scholarly opportunity, academic and industry trends, and positioning the University's research at the forefront of its fields of inquiry. The Vice President will serve as a highly visible and inspirational role model for the development of future leaders.

This will be achieved through:

Establishment of a central research function that supports and coordinates research efforts across the University’s schools and integrates with the URMC School of Medicine & Dentistry and the Lab for Laser Energetics. The Vice President will review the administrative functions associated with research for their effectiveness and efficiency, which may lead to restructuring to better support a University-wide approach to research.

Development, refinement and implementation of the University’s larger research strategic plan, including policy and budgetary processes. The Vice President will also seek to strengthen connections between the Medical Center and the University.

Evaluation of institutional pilot funding effectiveness, leading to a robust reporting structure around the University’s pilot funding programs.

Advocacy for the University research enterprise, internally and externally. This will include deepening connections to Federal government agencies, ranging from NIH and NSF DARPA, DOD, NASA, HRSA and many others, opening doors for new initiatives.

The ideal candidate for the Vice President of Research will bring a doctorate or terminal degree with a record of leadership and scholarship, a documented record of funded research and accomplishment, and demonstrated experience developing partnerships and addressing critical issues for the research community.

The Vice President of Research should be a strong leader, coach and mentor, with a willingness to take considered risks and capitalize on opportunities. The Vice President of Research should also demonstrate their commitment to be inclusive, collegial and open, yet decisive.

The University of Rochester is committed to fostering, cultivating, and preserving a culture of equity, diversity, and inclusion to advance the University’s Mission to Learn, Discover, Heal, Create – and Make the World Ever Better.

In support of our values and those of our society, the University is committed to non-discriminate on the basis of age, color, disability, ethnicity, gender identity or expression, genetic information, marital status, military/veteran status, national origin, race, religion/creed, sex, sexual orientation, citizenship status, or any other status protected by law.  This commitment extends to the administration of our policies, admissions, employment, access, and recruitment of candidates from underrepresented populations, veterans, and persons with disabilities consistent with these values and government contractor Affirmative Action obligations.

Founded in 1850, the University of Rochester is one of the nation’s leading research universities and is the cultural, artistic, healthcare, and educational leader for the region. The University is home to nearly 12,000 students and 3,900 full- and part-time faculty, who serve the University’s teaching, research, and clinical missions in eight schools and colleges and its renowned medical center.

Located in the city of Rochester, on the southern shore of Lake Ontario and northwest of the picturesque Finger Lakes in New York State, the university is fortunate to be located in a community rich in history and promise. Rochester offers its 1.1 million area residents the amenities of a large metropolitan area with a cost of living not available in many areas of comparable or larger size. The university’s extensive engagement with the Rochester community spans cultural opportunities provided by the Eastman School of Music and the Memorial Art Gallery to direct involvement with public institutions, such as a successful partnership with East High School, which aims to serve as a model for revitalizing urban public education.
