The University of Maryland Institute for Advanced Computer Studies, known by its acronym UMIACS, is a multidisciplinary computing research institute led by distinguished researchers and supported by a cutting-edge infrastructure. UMIACS pioneers computational science involving national defense, precision medicine, big data, cybersecurity, language and culture, and more.  Established in 1984, the institute's primary mission is to use a team-based approach—supported by powerful computing resources—to address grand challenges in science and society. Much of our research (currently exceeding $25 million annually in external awards) is funded by the numerous federal agencies and labs that dot the region.


In support of this mission, UMIACS is seeking a Grant Writer/Proposal Manager.  Reporting to the Director of the Institute, the proposal manager will manage and support contract and grant proposal development activity UMIACS, including working with the Institute’s Director to develop sponsored project strategy for the unit, providing technical writing and proposal editing services to faculty, managing the proposal development process (especially on collaborative proposals), educating (especially junior) faculty on the proposal development and evaluation process, enriching relationships with program managers at funding agencies and around campus, and aiding faculty in creating and resourcing non-research elements of their proposals (such as diversity and inclusion and educational program elements).


Essential duties:

  • Work with faculty, staff, and students to develop clear, concise, and effective sponsored project proposals. Provide extensive technical writing and editing services for proposal narratives Assist faculty in devising and composing non-research proposal elements that are appealing to or required by funders (e.g. diversity and inclusion initiatives, educational programming, etc.) Manage and coordinate the development of complex, high dollar, interdisciplinary sponsored research proposals. Set timelines, communicate tasks and deadlines, and facilitate communication between principal investigators. Synthesize all elements into a cohesive and refined final product to be submitted by the stated deadline. Provide training and guidance to UMIACS members on strategies for developing a successful proposal. This may include presenting formal training sessions as well as working with members one-on-one.




  • Work with the Director of UMIACS to develop and implement a cohesive strategy for improving the quality, quantity, relevance, and success of proposals produced by UMIACS members and/or furthering UMIACS’ mission Develop relationships with program managers at funding agencies as well as the grant writing community on and around campus Other duties or projects as assigned


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science or related field At least 3-5 years work experience At least 1 year of proposal development experience Excellent technical writing and editing skills Strong attention to detail Strong organization, planning, and project management skills Exceptional interpersonal and written and oral communication skills, and the ability to work in and contribute to a collaborative, team oriented environment



  • 3-5 years of proposal development experience PhD in Computer Science or related field
