Job Summary/Basic Function:
PRIMARY PURPOSE :
1. Plan, distribute and oversee work performed by Carpenters and other members of the Carpentry Shop; coordinate directly with Grounds Supervisor for utilizing Grounds Shop supplemental workers.
2. Perform carpentry and general maintenance duties required to maintain the College facilities.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS :
1. Run the day to day operations of the Carpentry Shop, utilizing the work order management system to identify required tasks and assign work in the most efficient manner, according to ever-changing priorities and worker competencies.
2. Working with the Director of Environmental Health & Safety, ensure that employees have a safe work environment and are knowledgeable and properly trained in the use of all equipment used by the Carpentry shop.
3. Manage small, in-house renovations and remodeling projects using Carpentry Shop and Grounds Shop labor, and in collaboration with the HVAC, Plumbing and Electrical Shops. Support other shops within the Physical Plant Dept. as required.
4. When not acting in a management capacity, perform carpentry and maintenance tasks such as repairing broken millwork, doors, windows, wall repairs, tile, flooring and other requirements identified in the work order management system.
5. Perform other general maintenance and duties as required to effectively Operate & Maintain the buildings entrusted to the care of the Physical Plant Dept.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS :
1. Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
2. Assist other departments when requested to do so.
3. As required; work overtime in emergency situations, to support special events, or complete maintenance to college facilities.
4. Attend and satisfactorily complete any safety or college required training programs. Ensure staff attend safety and college required training and follow practices and procedures as trained.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES :
1. Direct and supervise the Carpentry Shop workload and performance of employees on a daily, weekly, and annual basis. Complete annual performance reviews in accordance with Human Resources guidelines.
2. Perform work order management system reviews and data mining to track Work Orders (W/O) completed per person, time to complete performance on an individual and work center basis, avg. costs per W/O, and other data points useful in the assessment of overall Carpentry Shop performance and utilization of workforce and funding.
3. Train Carpenters, Trades Helpers and student workers as required.
4. Maintain tools, PPE and consumable materials inventory required to perform work, and order replenishments/replacements as required. Responsible for the oversight and effective use of the Carpentry Shop Operating budget to accomplish aforementioned tasks.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES :
1. Ability to organize and prioritize workloads with minimal/no supervision to effectively manage required deadlines.
2. Ability to use all carpentry tools and hardware.
3. Ability to effectively utilize a work order management system and other computer-based software systems such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
4. Ability to understand and work from blueprints and specifications.
5. Ability to work from ladders and staging without fear of heights.
6. Ability to communicate well both verbally and in writing.
7. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions, and read and understand written instructions.
8. Must be physically capable to life 50-100 pounds.
9. Must have a valid driver’s license
Individuals must possess these skills, abilities, and knowledge, or be able to explain and demonstrate that they can perform the essential functions of the job, without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.
Minimum Qualifications:
1. Must have a high school diploma or have graduated from a trade school and have a minimum of five years’ experience in carpentry/building trades environment or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
2. Must possess a current and valid Construction Supervisor’s license
