Job Description:
The Manufacturing & Systems Engineering (M&SE) Department in the College of Applied Science and Technology at Weber State University is accepting applications for a full-time, 9-month tenure track teaching position in the Systems Engineering program starting Spring or fall 2023, with a teaching load of 24 credit hours over two semesters. The M&SE Department currently has a newly developed M.Sc. Systems Engineering and a B.Sc. Manufacturing Systems Engineering.

This position will involve teaching a variety of graduate courses and laboratories in systems engineering, and appropriate scholarly, service and outreach activities. Courses may also include senior capstone projects. The focus of this position is to teach graduate courses in Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) and SysML, while incorporating INCOSE standards and teachings. The successful candidate will be flexible and able to work effectively with students, faculty, and staff. A candidate with broad capabilities in current technologies taught at WSU (industrial, manufacturing, and mechanical systems) would also be a plus. Service duties include program-building and advising, as well as commitment to extracurricular activities. Service to the department, college, and university is expected.

Job Duties:
Required courses to be taught are:
  1. Model based systems engineering (MBSE) and SysML: An introduction to Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) using a prominent modeling language. Various system architectures will be discussed and methodologies to build relevant system models will be practiced.
  2. System Logistics: Ensuring a System of Systems Approach: System of systems is a collection of task-oriented or dedicated systems that pool their resources and capabilities together to create a new, more complex system which offers more functionality and performance than simply the sum of the constituent systems. This course will introduce the subsequent sustaining maintenance & support of the system throughout its entire life cycle, including end of life/disposal. It will also include different DoD tailorable concepts to effectively manage and field products. Topics include: Reliability Growth, Initial Contractor Support (ICS), and Performance-Based Logistics (PBL)Systems of Systems (SoS) or Federation of Systems (FoS).
  3. Foundation of Systems Engineering: The Foundations of Systems Engineering course is an introductory overview of the systems engineering perspective and is presented to set the conceptual and practical framework of the entire systems engineering graduate program. The course covers the foundational components of systems engineering, from the concept development stage through the process steps of engineering development. Several issues related to post-development, disposal, and special topics areas are also presented.
  4. Overview of Systems Engineering Processes: An overview of system life-cycle design processes and the associated analysis techniques. Approaches to system reliability, maintainability and failure analysis are also explored.
  5. Other assigned upper and lower division courses in systems engineering including Organizational System, Requirement Engineering, and Manufacturing Systems I & II and Senior Projects.


Required Qualifications:
For a tenure track appointment, applicants must have a minimum of a PhD degree in STEM or related discipline and at least two years of applicable work experience.

For a non-tenure-track appointment, applicants must have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in STEM or related discipline and four years of applicable work experience.

For non-tenure-track appointments, transition to tenure track would require approval of the Dean and Department Chair based on sufficient evidence of academic qualifications and performance. Instructor (non-tenure track) positions are renewable by separate contract at the sole discretion of the university.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Candidates must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • A Ph.D. in Systems Engineering, Industrial Systems Engineering (ISE), or another STEM related field
  • INCOSE certified (CSEP/ESEP), being an INCOSE SEP exam instructor is a plus.
  • At least five years of industry experience after the B.Sc. in the degree related area.
  • Defense technology experience a plus
  • Teaching experience at the University level along with positive evaluations are a plus.
