Position Overview

Starting salary range is $50,648 - $58,241. The initial salary offer is commensurate with education and related work experience.

The Academic Advisor, ECHS is the on-site expert on Early College High Schools (ECHS) and provides guidance, supervision, and direct services to ensure effective administration of these programs. The Advisor serves as the point of contact between the Lee College campus and Goose Creek Consolidated Independent School District's (GCCISD) ECHS. In coordination with campus departments and public-school officials, the advisor will advise IMPACT ECHS (IECHS) students, parents, and community members on the admission process, financial aid eligibility, career exploration, transferability of courses, and related academic concerns. Make referrals to inside/outside agencies as necessary. Work directly with the IECHS personnel, ensure successful scheduling and registration of courses, monitor student progress towards certificate and degree completion, and work with parents to understand the college-going culture and the importance of postsecondary matriculation after high school graduation.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

ECHS job duties include:
  • Assist ECHS personnel with the admission process.
  • Assist with the summer bridge offered for incoming freshmen.
  • Present at 8th-grade information meetings in the community for students interested in attending ECHS.
  • Assist with the induction ceremony welcoming incoming freshmen.
  • Present at the Student/Parent meeting discussing the expectations of ECHS.
  • Create and present workshops for ECHS students promoting good study skills throughout the school year.
  • Work collaboratively with the ECHS principal, counselor, academic dean, college and career readiness counselor, and LC IMPACT ECHS liaison at bi-weekly meetings.
  • Collaborate with the high schools on recruitment strategies and activities beyond just attending College and Career nights and Parent nights.
  • Assist with the logistics and completion in ensuring that all high school students admitted into ECHS complete the ApplyTexas application.
  • Assist students with choosing a career pathway.
  • Provide one-on-one advising sessions to create individualized degree plans with students who have completed 15 SCH and ensure the students' pathway selection aligns with their career goals, high school endorsements, and high school schedule.
  • Provide one-on-one advising to students who are taking the College Preparatory Course in Language Arts and/or Mathematics.
  • Create and update spreadsheets to identify where students are at in the enrollment process.
  • Identify students who need to take placement tests by utilizing the information on the Onboarding Spreadsheet.
  • Act as a liaison between the Lee College Testing Center, students, and proctors throughout the testing process, including the identification of proctors at the high schools who need proctor training.
  • Review of test scores following initial testing for each student interested in college-level courses.
  • After completion of advising, determine eligibility and register students in the proper section.
  • Maintain mandatory New Student Orientation protocols to ensure all ECHS students attend.
  • Advocate for students through the coordination with the high school counselor/CCRC to assist with contacting students to ensure student success, including outreach from 3-week progress reports, address bookstore needs, process drops/withdrawals in collaboration with the GCCISD high school counselors, and act as a liaison between the student and faculty.
  • Understand Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board rules regarding ECHS programs.
  • Cooperatively work with college advisors, counselors, and staff to remain current on program changes and applicable financial aid options.
  • Serve as an advisor to parents of ECHS students attending IMPACT.
  • Establish Parent/Student Orientation Sessions on the college campus, as well as on high school campuses.
  • Discuss FERPA guidelines with students and their parents.
  • Handle phone calls and emails from counselors, parents, and students regarding the IECHS program.
  • Make onsite visits to IMPACT ECHS to facilitate communication and provide support.
  • Address complaints and disciplinary issues, including academic and behavioral with appropriate contacts as needed in a timely manner.
  • Generate reports for the ECHS programs in PeopleSoft.
Generalist duties:
Advise prospective, new, returning, continuing, and/or high school students which may include the following duties/activities:
  • Assist with the admission process.
  • Determine Texas Success Initiative obligation based on TAKS, THEA, Accuplacer, or other approved tests.
  • Implement state and institutional policies and procedures.
  • Interpret test scores.
  • Provide degree path/plans and explain degree and certificate programs.
  • Evaluation of unofficial transcripts for transferability of coursework.
  • Assist with registration to include teaching students online processes, course selection, data entry, etc.
  • Assist with the resolution of academic issues as an advocate for students.
  • Provide group advising and/or group registration stations.
  • Complete and submit biweekly reports to the Title V Project Director.
  • Coordinates and facilitates student orientation, financial aid workshops, and other Title V success initiatives for marginalized student populations.
  • Assists in identifying and developing innovative strategies to support students from marginalized student populations to improve persistence and completion.
  • Work cooperatively with faculty to identify needed early interventions.

  • Minimum Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

    • Bachelor's (or higher) degree
    • Two (2) years of experience working with students in secondary or post-secondary education
    • Valid Texas Driver's License
    • Excellent computer skills
    • Exceptional interpersonal, problem-solving, organizational, and event-planning skills
    • Excellent oral and written communications skills
    • Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, administrators, and other staff members in both a college and high school setting
    • Ability to work well with individuals from diverse backgrounds
    • Strong attention to accuracy and detail for tracking student success and student planning documents
    • Must be available to work evenings or weekends as needed

    Preferred qualifications:
    • Experience working with socioeconomically disadvantaged high school students/parents
    • Experience working with high school personnel, students, and parents
    • Experience working at a community college
    • Bilingual: able to read, write, and speak both Spanish and English
