Salary for Announcement

The minimum of the pay range for this position is $37,400. We anticipate the qualified candidate to be placed between $40,000 – $56,200. The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Position Summary

Academic Advisor Is at MSU Denver are primarily responsible for advising a caseload of students on degree requirements and providing long-term degree planning. Academic Advisor Is help students develop educational goals and define a career path, through use of a variety of advising approaches and tools. Academic Advisor Is monitor student progress, making targeted outreach to students to address potential obstacles in retention and graduation. Academic Advisor Is also participate in University wide and unit-specific advising initiatives.

The MSU Denver Exploratory Advisor position reports to the Associate Director within Student Support and Retention, part of the Classroom to Career Hub. The position advises students, organizes advising-related programming, and collaborates with University departments and offices to provide cohesive advising support for MSU Denver students. By adapting best-practices grounded in current theories around the promotion of higher education attainment and university retention, the Advisor will develop and execute practices and procedures to support students as they chart a degree plan at MSU Denver.

Duties/Responsibilities

60% Provide advising services to students:
  • Conduct advising sessions with students, assist with course selection, scheduling and registration questions using advising-based technology.
  • Support students through the major/minor and career exploration process
  • Utilize knowledge of curriculum to help students with long-term degree planning.
  • Prepare and maintain advising documentation in the current student success/customer management system.
  • Refer students to appropriate University resources.
  • Provide basic information related to career planning, financial literacy, admissions and other applicable information related to student needs.
  • Teach students about electronic advising and registration tools and how to best utilize them for success (e.g. Degree Progress Reports, Student Hub, Student Success Collaborative suite, etc…).
  • Assist with leading and/or participate in new student orientations and registration events.
  • Implement exploratory advising programming in collaboration with exploratory advising team


25% Monitor progress and retention of assigned students and collaborate with advising leadership and supervisors to develop retention strategies
  • Utilize advising-based systems to track and engage assigned students who are at-risk of not being retained (Early Alert).
  • Implement and participate in appropriate student-centered outreach.
  • Implement and participate in retention initiatives with faculty and staff.
  • Beginning or building upon experience accessing and understanding data related to individual caseloads and outreach.
  • Holistic advising and case management for students experiencing roadblocks to retention and completion


10% Professional Development and Leadership
  • Remain up to date on advising techniques and approaches.
  • Assist in development of advisor professional development opportunities.
  • Become a resource to other advisors and/or faculty regarding curriculum in assigned areas.
  • Assist other advisors and/or faculty in appropriate use of technology resources.
  • Develop and maintain professional learning networks with internal and external stakeholders, becoming a resource to others and assisting in problem solving to support student success.
5% Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Demonstrated experience in a professional setting helping others reach their academic, professional, and/or personal goals.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving, prioritizing, and preparation skills.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Specialized Degree in either Higher Education, College Personnel, Counseling, or an academic discipline
  • Experience using computer-based student information system(s) (e.g. Ellucian Banner, PeopleSoft, CampusVue, etc.)
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) proficiency desirable
  • Experience working with and/or being sensitive to the educational needs of a diverse urban population.
  • Experience relating effectively to a diverse community (students, faculty, staff, alumni and parents)
Work Hours

8:00 – 5:00 M-F with occasional evening and weekend hours.
