The salary range for this position is $60,000 – $63,000 at Assistant Professor rank. The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based upon a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, education, experience, specialty and training.

Position Summary

The Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology at Metropolitan State University of Denver invites applications for a tenure-track position at Assistant Professor level starting Fall 2023.

Duties/Responsibilities

The successful candidate will:
  1. Carry a 3/3 teaching load, i.e., 9 credit hours per fall and spring semester.
  2. Teach introductory and advanced courses in Criminal Justice & Criminology and/or Cybersecurity.
  3. Advise (5 hours per week) with cultural awareness and sensitivity to the educational needs of students from a diverse, and non-traditional student population in an urban environment.
  4. Provide service to improve the welfare of the Department, College of Health and Human Sciences, and the University, as well as the community at large.
  5. Publish scholarly articles and make scholarly presentations at refereed conferences and community events commensurate with the departmental guidelines.


Faculty may also teach during the summer semester for additional compensation (subject to availability).

Required Qualifications

  1. Minimum education/work experience includes one of the following: PhD in Criminal Justice, Criminology, or a closely related/relevant field (with specialization in Criminal Justice or Criminology) and four years’ teaching experience; or ABD in Criminal Justice, Criminology, or a closely related/relevant field (with specialization in Criminal Justice or Criminology) and four years’ teaching experience. Note: Advanced ABDs are encouraged to apply, however doctorate degree must be conferred prior to the position start date in August of 2023
  2. Evidence or demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching and scholarship
  3. Experience working collaboratively with diverse students, faculty, and staff


Preferred Qualifications

A successful candidate will have:
  • Earned Doctorate in Criminal Justice, Criminology, or Sociology with specialization in Criminal Justice or Criminology or a closely related field
  • Area of specialization is open, but preference may be given to candidates who specialize in corrections, victimology, critical criminology, juvenile justice, and/or cybersecurity
  • Demonstrated ability to teach a wide variety of courses in criminology, criminal justice, and/or cybersecurity
  • Ability to teach across a variety of delivery methods including online, hybrid, face-to-face courses
  • Evidence or demonstrated potential for community engagement (e.g., outreach to K-12 schools, community partnerships, advisory boards)
