This is a Nurse 1 (RN) position in Student Health Service whose primary duties are to provide for nursing evaluation and care for students who present to Student Health Service. Position works Monday – Friday, approx. 8am – 4:30pm.
Duties include phone and walk-in triage, initial evaluations/“rooming” of patients, administration of prescribed medications and immunizations, wound care, emergency contraceptive and other nursing visits, collection of laboratory specimens and performance of CLIA waived testing.
Position includes an approved geographic differential payment of $12,000 annually, in addition to base salary. Major Responsibilities
1. Responsible for triaging and evaluating students for medical care on a continual basis
a). most triaging is done over the phone, but some is done in person with walk-in students. All triage interactions must be documented in the electronic medical record.
b). triage interview, whether by phone or in person, should include obtaining and documenting nature and duration of students problem, time of onset, severity, associated symptoms and any treatment such as recent emergency room visit, self care, and any current medications and/or allergies.
2. When “working up” patients who present to SHS for care, obtains and documents in the electronic medical record all pertinent information, vital signs, and performs any necessary nursing procedures prior to clinician’s initial evaluation of each student.
3. Notifies clinician’s of student’s condition if situation warrants an urgent evaluation.
4. Manages self care cold table routine for students in a timely efficient manner, replenishes the stock of cold table medication, packaging and labeling of medication as needed.
5. Interacts in a professional and caring manner with students and other staff and maintains confidentiality of patient information and records at all times.
6. Responsible for maintenance of laboratory and pharmacy.
a). Performs lab procedures as directed by clinicians, following laboratory policies and procedures.
b). Does necessary controls in accordance with policies.
c). Pharmacy- maintains availability of stocked and packaged formulary and OTC medicines.
7. Provides pregnancy testing and consultation.
8. Provides emergency contraception per request.
9. Provides necessary nursing treatments and nursing observations under the direction of Medical Director and clinicians.
10. Initiates preliminary portion of sport physical requirement.
11. Recertifies CPR at least every two years.
12. Is involved in Q.A. activities. Functional and Supervisory Relationships Required Qualifications
You must be licensed and currently registered to practice nursing in New York State, possess a limited permit to practice nursing in New York State, or be eligible to enter the examination for such license. You must obtain your NYS license within one year of the date of appointment or action will be taken to remove you from the position. Preferred Qualifications
Experience in a college health service. Experience in a primary care, urgent care or outpatient office setting. Experience working with an adolescent/young adult population. Experience working with an electronic medical record system. EEO Statement
