JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Assistant Curator - Education is a supportive position within the Museum's Education Department that reports to the Senior Curator of Education and Public Programs, and provides critical assistance to both the Senior Curator of Education and Public Programs and the Curator of Education and Research. The Education department creates initiatives that make the museum's exhibitions and collections more accessible to diverse audiences through educational programing. It enriches FIT's academic programs, as part of its educational role to support FIT faculty and students and to encourage lifelong learning among diverse and inclusive audiences.

The Assistant Curator works in a highly creative environment. Duties include supporting department curators in planning and executing events, assisting with education initiatives, and coordinating the museum's internship and museum facilitators programs. In addition, the Assistant Curator researches upcoming projects and assists with and/or executes programs developed by the Education staff. Responsibilities include maintaining and reviewing records, contact lists and RSVPs for events, and maintaining budgets and related records. The applicant must be able to work some evenings to assist with a variety of museum events.

In addition to working with members of the Education department, the candidate will work with the Collections and Education Assistant, the Campus Exhibitions Coordinator, the Museum Media Manager, other museum staff, as well as  FIT faculty and staff?to discover and institutionalize effective ways to provide support for and implement the collaborations between the Museum and FIT academic departments, such as Art and Design, Business and Technology, and Liberal Arts. This also includes, but is not limited to, working as the primary liaison with the Graduate Studies department for their annual exhibition at MFIT, coordinating museum internships, and coordinating the Museum Facilitators Program in collaboration with the Art History and Museum Professions undergraduate program.

Essential Functions:

  • Provide support before, during and after events led by Senior Curator of Education and Public Programs.
  • Assist behind the scenes with Education events such as lectures, screenings.
  • Assist Senior Curator and Curator of Education with special projects, such as publications, temporary off-site activities, etc.
  • Take registrations of Education events using Salesforce ticketing system.
  • Entry education events into the museum's Event Calendar.
  • Work with museum facilitators and interns. Manage facilitators' schedules.
  • Provide general staff support at Museum openings; serve as a flexible member of the Museum staff.
  • Provide general administrative support to the department.
  • Maintain order of all electronic and paper files in the department.
  • Oversee museum information email and telephone lines.
  • Assist in the up keeping of department records and databases.
  • With guidance of the Senior Curator of Education, oversee and track departmental budgets.
  • Process requisitions; prepare invoices and transfer monies as required.
  • Monitor account balances while processing deposits and expenditures.
  • Settle discrepancies in vendor accounts for the department and keep Curator of Education informed.
  • Fulfill supply orders based on education staff requests.
  • Provide general administrative support to the department.

REQUIREMENTS:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience working at a museum.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Friendly and professional demeanor. Able to communicate enthusiastically yet maturely with a wide range of populations including community groups, children, local community leaders, school administrators.
  • Strong interest in a career in museum education and an understanding of best practices in education in the museum context.
  • Ability to work in a team and with diverse constituencies.
  • Excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills.
  • Strong computer skills including expertise in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills, including the ability to write for varied contexts, such as education and marketing, as well as for various learning levels and learning styles.
  • Scrupulous attention to detail in all aspects of work required.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Familiarity with professional office procedures and protocol.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree preferred.
  • New York State Department of Education (NYSED) teaching certification.
  • Previous experience with Salesforce or other contact management software, Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator.
  • Fluency in a foreign language preferred.

Days/Hours: M-F, 9am-5pm, in person; some evenings; work schedule subject to change based on needs of the department.
