The Associate Provost is a senior leader on the UAMS Northwest Campus. The associate provost is the most senior-level role for academic affairs in the Northwest Arkansas (NWA) region. In this position, a qualified person will report directly to the provost and have a matrix report to the NWA vice chancellor. This person will coordinate missions for colleges and academic programs, including interprofessional education (IPE), in NWA. 


Key Responsibilities

  • Foster and grow collaborations in academics and research, in the region and outside the state, specifically enhancing and cultivating long-term partnerships with University of Arkansas-Fayetteville, Whole Health Institute and other existing or potential partnerships with academic centers or medical systems.
  • Direct and lead academic affairs for NWA in coordination with the provost and college deans, including faculty-initiated programming, student-initiated programming and resources needed to support academic activities on the Northwest Campus.
  • Work collaboratively with the associate deans in NWA as well as college deans located in Little Rock. This includes, but is not limited to, assisting academic programs (including faculty and staff) to ensure compliance with accreditation requirements as well as applicable federal, state laws, and UAMS policies / regulations.
  • Provide administrative support for all academic and research programs that are part of the NWA Region.
  • Assist Associate Deans with developing and expanding student clinical placements in the region. In partnership with the NWA vice chancellor, assist with long-range planning for the Northwest Campus and for the future of UAMS in NWA, overseeing regional strategic initiatives as directed by the provost and NWA vice chancellor. Foster and cultivate relationships, which grow the UAMS missions in the NWA region. Oversee Simulation Lab, student services, library and regional academic infrastructure. Collaborate with the colleges and Division of Academic Affairs for success in student engagement as well as in faculty recruitment and retention of faculty to NWA. Collaboratively work with vice chancellor in NWA region on institutional advancement to seek operating and endowment funds for academic, research and clinical programs through various agencies, foundations, corporations, as well as friends and benefactors of UAMS. Serve as the liaison to the advisory board and executive committee campus academics and UAMS student initiatives. Model the UAMS Core Values: Integrity, Respect, Diversity and Health Equity, Teamwork, Creativity, Excellence, and Safety. Executive projects as assigned by Provost and NWA vice chancellor. Act as vice chancellor representative as requested.

Required Knowledge, Abilities and Skills

  • A commitment to shared governance Effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills A commitment to advocacy for the disciplines represented within the university An understanding of and commitment to public higher education Ability to establish and maintain collaborative relationships Ability to motivate the diverse workforce within an academic environment Exceptional communication and problem-solving skills are required The ability to coordinate multiple goals and projects is essential


Minimum Education and/or Experience

  • A terminal degree in a field relevant to health professions or higher education; relevant experience in leadership, administration and interprofessional collaboration; and experience in academic affairs. Strong preference will be given to an individual with a faculty rank of associate professor or professor with tenure at an academic health sciences university.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in academic affairs functions at a health sciences university, including policy, academic administration and interprofessional education.   Experience within an academic organization, with an understanding of the university environment (e.g., governance structure, roles and responsibilities), and the ability to operate effectively within that context; knowledge of the research organization and programs, including the ability to foster research and collaborations across campus and across institutions; excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to work effectively with colleagues across the institution; discretion and respect for confidentiality.
