Salary for Announcement
The salary range for this position is $47,000 – $55,000. The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

Position Summary
As a key member of the Center for Equity and Student Achievement team, the ESL & Student Support Specialist reports to and assists the Director of the Immigrant Services Program, meets with and provides comprehensive academic and college success support services to current and prospective students and family members, and coordinates oversight over front desk staff. The Specialist will develop and participate in various student and student staff development activities designed to support enrollment and retention initiatives within the Immigrant Services Program, CESA, and the University and ensure the smooth operation of the CESA front desk

Duties/Responsibilities
(65%) Support Services
The ESL & Student Success Specialist supports linguistically and culturally diverse students at MSU Denver through language and writing development, one-on-one ESL tutoring, and workshop facilitation. This support includes assessing and monitoring students’ linguistic, academic, and cultural growth, developing effective language development tools and initiatives, as well as training and mentoring of student tutors; this may further include supervising & hiring of student tutors. The support services provided by this position also include assistance with financial aid and other institutional forms, academic appeals, cover letters and resumes, navigation of college enrollment and registration processes. This position may also serve as Dream.US scholarship advisor.
(15%) Outreach, Committees, and Advocacy:
The ESL & Student Success Specialist will be responsible for staying current on academic and other issues relating to ESL college learners as well as immigrant/refugee groups, DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival) and ASSET (Advancing Students for a Stronger Economy Tomorrow) students, as well as various ethnic groups and their needs and backgrounds. An important aspect of this position is to increase awareness across campus and within academic departments of ESL support and tutoring for non-native speakers of English. This includes but is not limited to class visits, tabling at campus events, and close cooperation with programs and departments such as the Writing Center, the English and Communication Studies department, and other relevant campus partners and stakeholders. In addition, the specialist position requires staying up to date with information relevant to the student population served by the Immigrant Services Program as well as course catalog changes. This position includes participation on committees as appropriate and approved by the Director of ISP to assist in the development of comprehensive and across-campus retention initiatives to support student success; this may also include off-campus community outreach and assistance with recruiting efforts.
(10%) Provide support to programs within CESA :
Including but not limited to TRIO, CAMP, or the Center for Multicultural Engagement and Inclusion.
(10%) Perform additional duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree
- At least two years of experience providing English-language academic support to students from diverse populations.
- Bilingual language skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in English, Education, Communication or Language Studies, or Social Sciences, such as Counseling, Sociology, History, or Psychology, or related degree.
- Experience working with international students, immigrants, and/or refugee groups.
- At least one-year professional experience teaching, tutoring, or direct support of international students, immigrants, refugees, and non-native speakers.
- Knowledge of challenges and barriers ESL learners face in a higher education setting and policies impacting immigrant, refugees, and undocumented students.
- Experience designing programs and events that promote equity and justice and demonstrated commitment to expanding knowledge relating to equity and social justice
- Ability to correctly speak, write, translate, and interpret a language commonly used in the Denver immigrant community.
- Experience conducting evaluation or assessment of student performance or program.
M-F 8-5 and some evening and weekend work is required.
