The assistant director of digital accessibility will work with the ICT Accessibility Policy Council on evaluating materials submitted as part of the accessible ICT procurement process. They will also facilitate meetings for the Accessibility Assessment Committee and Accessibility Compliance.

The assistant director will directly support ITS staff members, providing guidance and techniques on developing, evaluating, and implementing enterprise software and hardware and product evaluation assistance.

The assistant director will maintain and enhance the online Syracuse University Accessible Technology Toolkit.

Ultimately, the assistant director will enable ITS to stay abreast of all information and communication accessibility regulations and standards to provide University leadership and accessible products and services.

This position is anticipated to be filled on a fully remote basis. Not all geographical areas within the United States are eligible. Qualifications
  • A master’s degree is preferred, but a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, human-computer interaction, education, or a relevant field is required.
  • Three (3) plus years of relevant experience in customer service, assistive technology, or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • Experience in Higher Education is preferred.
  • Globally recognized certification(s) in digital accessibility preferred ( DHS / OAST Trusted Tester for Web or Section 508 Procurement certifications, IAAP CPACC certification or completion of test preparation course, web accessibility specialist ( WAS ) certification, etc.).
  • Familiarity with accessibility browser extensions preferred ( WAVE, ANDI, SiteImprove, ARC Toolkit, etc.).
  • Familiarity with the principles of Universal Design for Learning preferred.
  • Passion and experience with helping people with disabilities, building and making centrally provided products and services more accessible and usable for everyone, and working with assistive technologies.
  • Excellent written communication skills for heavy documentation; verbal communication skills for training and development.
Job Specific Qualifications
  • Thorough knowledge of the federal disability mandates and other relevant laws and guidance ( WCAG, Section 504, 508, Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments ( ADAA ) Title III, TEACH Act) applicable to technology accessibility and tools provided in higher education.
  • Two (2) plus years of hands-on experience using web accessibility testing tools and screen readers to evaluate websites/web applications and testing electronic documents (Adobe and Microsoft Office Suite applications).
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Worldwide Web Consortium (W3C) WAI Web Content Accessibility Guidelines ( WCAG ) 2. X Standards and industry usability standards and methodologies.
  • Extensive knowledge in the following areas: Web Accessibility, Compliance & Laws, Analysis, Programming (JavaScript, HTML, and CSS ).
  • Deep working knowledge of the scope of available assistive technologies and how they interact with web, desktop, and mobile technologies.
Responsibilities
  • Provide oversight, management, and consulting of the University Information and Communication Technology Accessibility Policy. Will work closely with the ITS Business Office, ITS Contracts Office, Office of Diversity and Inclusion, Center for Disability Resources, Technology Leadership Council, and Purchasing on the evaluation and procurement of accessible technologies.
  • Facilitate Accessibility Assessment Committee and Accessibility Compliance Committee discussions by evaluating submittals from the campus community for accuracy. Coach other campus community members procuring ICT on campus and buyers on how to interpret a Voluntary Production Accessibility Template ( VPAT ) and how to measure a product against the WCAG 2.X A and AA standards.
  • Work with and educate ITS internal units on accessibility testing and Universal design of hardware and software implemented on a local and enterprise-wide scale. Educate ITS internal staff procuring ICT on campus and buyers on how to interpret a Voluntary Production Accessibility Template ( VPAT ) and how to measure a product against the WCAG 2.X A and AA standards. Monitor ITS applications and services for accessibility compliance and work with developers on remediation techniques.
  • Identify and consult with the campus communities on training programs that can be used to improve digital accessibility design, build, and evaluation skills, and maintain and develop the online Syracuse University Accessible Technology Toolkit.
