The Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at the University of North Florida seeks an excellent teacher for a full-time instructor position. This is a renewable position (with a promotion opportunity) in the Religious Studies program. Candidates should have competence in theoretical issues in the academic study of religion and a primary disciplinary identity in Religious Studies, area of specialization open. Teaching responsibilities at the lower level will include Comparative Religions and IDS 1932, an interdisciplinary writing course that supports UNF’s Writing Around the Curriculum QEP (topics vary by instructor). Teaching responsibilities at the upper level will include courses in the candidate’s area of expertise as well as a course or courses that could contribute to UNF’s new interdisciplinary Africana Studies program. This is a teaching-oriented, ongoing, promotable position with some service/committee opportunities.

We are particularly interested in applicants that will assist in growing Religious Studies at UNF and candidates who could meaningfully contribute to community-based learning opportunities, which are important for both Religious Studies and Africana Studies majors and supports our Carnegie Community Engaged Institution status. Our new colleague will teach four courses per semester (with available summer teaching if desired), make meaningful service contributions, and be a welcome addition to our program and to our interdisciplinary communities.

In 2020 and 2021, UNF received the prestigious INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award, the only application-based national award for U.S. colleges and universities that exhibit an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion across their campuses. In addition, UNF ranked highest among the HEED institutions and was recognized as a Diversity Champion in both 2020 and 2021. The University of North Florida (UNF) is committed to providing an inclusive and welcoming environment for all who interact in our community. In building this environment, we strive to attract students, faculty, and staff from a variety of cultures, backgrounds and life experiences, and strongly encourage applications from women and non-binary persons, those from underrepresented groups, and persons with disabilities. The University of North Florida is an Equal Opportunity Employer and does not commit or permit discrimination or harassment on the basis of genetic information, race, color, religion, age, sex, disability, gender identity/expression, sexual orientation, marital status, national origin, or veteran status in any educational, employment, social, recreational program or activity that it offers. In addition, UNF will not commit or permit retaliation against an individual who complains of discrimination or harassment or an individual who cooperates in an investigation of an alleged violation of University Regulation. UNF faculty are expected to maintain the highest standards of academic excellence in all phases of instruction and service.

Ph.D. in Religious Studies at time of employment is preferred, ABD will be considered. Salary negotiable, full benefits included. To apply, applicants must complete an online application, as well as upload supplemental documents, at www.unfjobs.org in order to be considered for this position. Applicants who do not apply online and/or upload all the required documents will not be considered for this position. Teaching portfolio should include a statement of teaching philosophy, syllabi of courses taught and evaluation data for recent courses (including peer observation if available), sample syllabi for Comparative Religion and for an upper-level course of the candidate’s choice (new or one that has been taught previously), and examples of methods and strategies for teaching writing. To receive full consideration, complete applications should be received by Jan 12th, 2023 (review deadline extended from Nov 28th). Once the completed application and documents are submitted, candidates will receive a confirmation number that should be kept for their records.
