THE OPPORTUNITY

The University of Washington (UW) in Seattle, one of the world's preeminent universities, invites inquiries, applications, and nominations for the position of Dean of the School of Pharmacy (SOP). The next Dean will provide creative, bold, and inspired leadership to one of the most highly regarded schools of pharmacy in the nation. The SOP has the 7th largest NIH research portfolio in the field (and 4th in research funding per faculty member) and is also ranked 7th by U.S. News and World Report in recognition of the school’s excellence in education, research, service, and clinical practice. The State of Washington is a national leader in pharmacy innovation. In 1979, it became the first state to recognize pharmacists as healthcare providers and continues to lead the field in expanding opportunities in the profession. As a crucial voice in the state, the Dean of the SOP at the UW is a position of state and national influence and will play a leading role in shaping the future of pharmacy practice through supporting cutting-edge research, outstanding didactic and experiential learning, and advocacy for the profession.

The UW is one of the most highly recognized public universities in the United States, ranked seventh in the world by U.S. News and World Report and home to highly ranked colleges and schools, providing the full breadth of learning opportunities for undergraduate, graduate, professional, and continuing education students. In FY21, the UW received over $1.8 billion in research funding and $5.8 billion in operating revenues across the University and UW Medicine. The next Dean will join a strong and accomplished cohort of health science deans on campus, working collaboratively to shape the future of academic medicine in pharmacy education, research, and clinical practice.

Reporting to the Provost, the Dean will build upon the tremendous successes of the SOP. This includes the recent full reaccreditation of the PharmD program (for 8 years) and PhD programs (for 10 years) and a newly revamped curriculum that provides experiential learning to PharmD students throughout the entire program. The Dean will bring a progressive and innovative vision to the SOP and will be a strong steward of resources and a forward-thinking strategist for assessing new opportunities for revenue and philanthropy. Additionally, the next Dean will ensure that the PharmD and PhD programs are supported through faculty hiring, mentoring, and retention. The Dean will collaborate across the breadth of health sciences, leveraging the tremendous infrastructure of a unified health sciences building and a university-wide dedication to interprofessional research and education. The Dean will also be a visible leader who prioritizes a welcoming and inclusive community that values equity and diversity, and has a track record of success in these regards. The Dean will engage with students, staff, faculty, and constituents to highlight the outstanding opportunities at the SOP and in the field.
