The School of Music, Dance and Theatre in the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at Arizona State University seeks an exceptional music theatre artist-educator to teach music theatre performance courses for undergraduate and graduate students, including B.M. Music Theatre Performance and M.M. Voice, Music Theatre and Opera Performance majors, as well as minors and non-majors. The ideal candidate is committed to advancing inclusive, equitable, diverse and humane practices in the classroom, rehearsal room, performance venues, and their profession, as well as fostering interdisciplinary collaboration with students and faculty across the school. This is a full-time clinical assistant professor appointment, beginning fall 2023. This position is on the ASU Tempe campus.

The Music Theatre and Opera program in the School of Music, Dance & Theatre at Arizona State University’s Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts is committed to preparing outstanding music theatre and opera artists for professional careers in the 21st century. Through expert individual and classroom instruction, the production of operas and musicals, student-led workshops, new work development, research opportunities, dynamic community engagement, and multiple professional collaborations, we foster a creative, student-centered environment that enables students to discover who they are as individuals and artists, at their own pace, in their own unique way, at the highest level.
Principal duties for this position include teaching acting and song performance courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels, overseeing the music theatre minor, and directing or choreographing up to one production per year. The position involves active recruitment of students locally and nationally, and working with area faculty, staff and students on season planning and execution, including collaborations within the school and with external partners. Additional skills in stage direction, choreography and/or music direction are desirable. The position includes mentoring and advising students at undergraduate and graduate levels. Additionally, there is an expectation to work collaboratively across the disciplines and contribute to the breadth and depth of course offerings for major and non-major students in both in-person and online learning environments. In addition to teaching, active participation in shared faculty governance and service within the School, Institute, and University is expected.
- Demonstrated ability to foster the educational and cultural needs of all ASU students who study music theatre and opera, and to advance equity, diversity and inclusion in the field. Demonstrated pedagogical excellence and innovation in the teaching of music theatre, specifically in acting and song performance, and synthesis of singing, acting and movement skills. Demonstrated excellence in teaching at the college level or other educational contexts. Record of creative activity and/or scholarship, including performance. Graduate degree in music theatre, voice or a related field or commensurate experience; a graduate degree is required for international applicants.
- Experience mentoring and advising students at the undergraduate and graduate level. Expertise in musical theatre and/or contemporary commercial music performance practice styles and vocal technique. National/international recognition in creative activity (performance) and/or scholarship. Professional musical theatre, theatre, and/or operatic stage experience. Demonstrated experience recruiting and teaching students from diverse cultural and pedagogical backgrounds, including acting and dance, popular music, Western classical music and opera, in addition to musical theatre. Experience as a stage director, music director or choreographer. Experience in fields related to technical design and production, season planning and execution. Experience in innovative curricular development. Experience with innovative technology and virtual teaching and production formats. The ability to work and collaborate across artistic disciplines, with people outside the arts, across campus, and in the community. Ability to design and implement curriculum and programs, including online and in-person courses, in and across the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts (HIDA) and in the School of Music, Dance and Theatre.
