Position Summary

As a key member of the Center for Equity and Student Achievement team, the Student Support Specialist reports to and assists the Director of the Immigrant Services Program, meets with and provides comprehensive academic and college success support services to current and prospective students and family members, and coordinates oversight over front desk staff. The Specialist will develop and participate in various student and student staff development activities designed to support enrollment and retention initiatives within the Immigrant Services Program, CESA, and the University and ensure the smooth operation of the CESA front desk

Duties/Responsibilities

(60%) Support Services:
Support Services include advising/coaching, assistance with class registration, career planning, referrals to appropriate resources both on-campus and externally, assistance with financial aid forms, applications/appeals, goal/future planning, encouraging students to participate in campus activities, academic guidance, and tracking of academic progress. This position will promote, support, and participate in multicultural and diversity initiatives to positively impact enrollment, student retention, and graduation rates. This position will also assist in ongoing evaluation and assessment of student learning outcomes. Provide services to non-native English speaking students and to provide counseling and informational sessions to Spanish-speaking students and parents as needed. May need to communicate orally and in written form with Spanish-speaking parents and community members; occasionally provide translations into Spanish. This position also oversees the Immigrant Services Program peer mentoring program, including hiring, training, and performance evaluation of the peer mentors.

(20%) Outreach and Community Engagement:
This position will be responsible for connecting with relevant community partners – such as high schools, higher education institutions, or education-oriented non-profit service providers – in order to provide relevant information and services focused on increasing college access for immigrant, refugee, and undocumented students. Tasks related to this responsibility may include developing materials and workshops for on- and off-campus presentations, speaking to prospective students, families, and community members about financial aid or in-state tuition options, ways to prepare for a successful college experience, and other relevant topics. Wherever possible and relevant, this position will also work with MSU Denver students to highlight their experiences and expertise as immigrant-background college students. Perform additional duties as assigned.

(20%) Front Desk student staff supervision
The Front Desk and Student Support Specialist will coordinate the hiring, training, scheduling, and performance evaluation of front desk staff. This position will ensure that student staff for the CESA front desk is properly trained, follows workplace expectations and guidelines, correctly uses workhours and tracking systems, and is given access to regular professional development opportunities. This position further coordinates professional training and development opportunities for CESA front desk staff, and closely collaborates with others student and professional staff supervisors at CESA and across the university to provide such professional growth opportunities. Perform additional duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Two years of experience working with students or clients in a support services program within or directly related to higher education.
  • Experience providing academic support to students from diverse populations.
  • Bilingual language skills.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with immigrant and/or refugee groups.
  • At least one-year professional experience teaching, tutoring, or direct support of international students, immigrants, refugees, and non-native speakers.
  • Knowledge of DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival), ASSET (Advancing Students for a Stronger Economy Tomorrow), and policies impacting immigrant, refugees, and undocumented students.
  • Bilingual – Spanish (Correctly speak, write, translate, and interpret)
  • Experience conducting evaluation or assessment of program and/or student performance.
  • Experience designing programs and events that promote equity and justice and demonstrated commitment to expanding knowledge relating to equity and social justice
  • One year or more of experience supervising student or professional staff.

M-F 8-5 p.m. Some evening and weekend work required.
