Department Summary

The Department of Earth Sciences is an instructional department within the College of Arts and Sciences that supports significant research activities in a wide range of fields in Earth and Environmental Science. The Department includes approximately 30 faculty (including TTF and NTTF), many of whom have large research grants, 52 graduate students, 90 undergraduate majors, ten researchers, ten postdocs, two classified employees, eight student employees, emeritus faculty, and various visiting professors, courtesy professors, and career and adjunct instructors.
Position Summary

The Oregon Hazards Lab at the University of Oregon, Department of Earth Sciences seeks a skilled IT/System Administrator to support our mission of developing a real-time, multi-hazards monitoring system. Based in Eugene, OR, this position will support IT needs of the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network (PNSN), the ShakeAlert Earthquake Early Warning system, and the Alert Wildfire system which serve to increase public safety and resiliency. The PNSN is a cooperative network operated by the University of Oregon (UO) and the University of Washington (UW). Alert Wildfire is a cooperative network operated by the UO and the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR). This position will collaborate closely with our partners at UW and UNR.

We seek an individual to work as a member of a research team by supporting the IT needs of real-time seismic and environmental monitoring projects. Under the supervision of Oregon Hazards Lab management, this position will review the cyber security status of remote devices and implement improvements. This person will also assist with data import, device monitoring, remote diagnostics/troubleshooting, and administration of development and production servers at UO.

This position is critical for managing remote data backhaul and assisting with data routing protocols, and cybersecurity audit/planning. We value the capacity to work independently with minimal direct supervision in a highly coordinated fashion within a collegial team.
Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or closely-related discipline.
  • Three years of progressively responsible IT experience including Linux system administration, shell scripting, computer networking, and application support.

  • Demonstrated ability to learn, research, and apply new solutions.
  • Keen attention to detail, organization, documentation, standards, procedures, and controls.
  • Understanding of system administration best practices.
  • Understanding of, or ability to rapidly build understanding of, SNMP and state-of-health monitoring via systems such as Nagios.
  • Understanding of computer networking, including VPNs and private networks.
  • Ability to identify and establish new standards for quality, performance, and/or productivity.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills; ability to maintain open communication with all internal and external contacts.
  • Able to receive and apply feedback in an appropriate manner.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills, including collaborating, mentoring, and training others, and the ability to work effectively both individually and as a team member.
    Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with real-time data flow from IoT devices via private networks.
  • Familiarity with working in a 24/7 operational organization.
  • Familiarity with Ansible.
  • Interest in supporting scientific research and advancing public safety.
  • Ability to troubleshoot hardware and software for end-user devices and servers.
