Department Summary

The Oregon Hazards Lab (O-HAZ) uses science, technology, and community engagement to understand, monitor, and mitigate multi-hazards within the Pacific Northwest. O-HAZ resides as a research facility within the Department of Earth Sciences (ERTH), consisting of ERTH faculty, 7 full-time professional staff, graduate and undergraduate students, and temporary specialists. O-HAZ works with a broad consortium of collaborators within the University of Oregon and with external groups across the Northwestern U.S.

The Department of Earth Sciences is an instructional department within the College of Arts and Sciences that supports significant research activities in a wide range of fields in Earth and Environmental Science. The Department includes approximately 30 faculty (including TTF and NTTF), many of whom have large research grants, 42 graduate students, 90 undergraduate majors, seven research associates, ten post-docs, two classified employees, eight student employees, emeriti faculty, and various visiting professors, courtesy professors, and career and pro tempore instructors.
Position Summary

The University of Oregon, Department of Earth Sciences seeks a skilled field technician to pursue our mission of real-time, multi-hazards monitoring. Based in Eugene, OR, this position travels across Oregon and adjacent states to maintain and operate a monitoring system that collects scientific data to increase public safety and resiliency.

This technician will monitor, troubleshoot, repair, construct, install, test, and maintain digital instrumentation, data telemetry infrastructure, and networking systems. This position jointly oversees the design and maintenance of digital monitoring systems and related telemetry. We value the capacity to work independently with minimal direct supervision as well as in a highly coordinated fashion within a collegial team, both in the lab and the field. The position involves coordinating with the federal, state, and local agencies to define and employ best practices and document technological innovations.

This position typically requires carrying equipment for short distances over uneven terrain.
Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in the STEM field, or relevant experience that demonstrates equivalent qualifications.
    Professional Competencies

  • Ability to operate, or learn to operate, 4x4 vehicles, often in off-road environments.
  • Ability to work well both autonomously and in a team-oriented group.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in adverse weather.
    Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with DC power systems.
  • Knowledge of and experience with formal documentation procedures.
  • Experience with seismic or related data acquisition systems.
  • Experience in climbing, rope systems, and working in vertical environments: towers, buildings, water towers, etc.
  • Experienced in radio telemetry systems in both the licensed and unlicensed spectrum.
  • Knowledgeable in basic networking protocols.
  • Experience with deploying scientific equipment in remote field settings.
  • Experience with construction techniques and earthmoving equipment.
