The Department of Construction and Operations Management at South Dakota State University seeks two outstanding individuals for tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor positions. We are looking for two creative and innovative professionals to join us in August 2023. These are 9-month, 100% time, benefit-eligible positions. These positions are supervised by the Head of the Construction & Operations Management Department.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Teaching undergraduate and graduate level courses. (construction surveying & lab, building systems modeling, cost estimating, planning & scheduling, structural analysis, applied mechanics, construction safety and building methods).
  • Conducting research in construction engineering & management and developing externally funded research programs.
  • Recruiting, advising and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Establishing a strong collaboration with departmental faculty and performing multidisciplinary research.
  • Publishing the results of research in peer refereed archival journals.
  • Serving as an active member of the technical community and participate in relevant professional and technical society activities.
  • Providing leadership and service to the Department, College, and University.
  • Pursuing scholarly, technology, and professional activities that will keep him/her at the leading edge of his/her field.
  • Other duties assigned by the Department Head.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ph.D. degree in construction management, construction engineering, civil engineering, project management or a closely related field completed by the first day of employment.
  • High-quality research and teaching potential.
  • Effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Background in or understanding of two or more of the following areas: building information modeling, cost estimating, planning & scheduling, structural analysis, applied mechanics, construction surveying & lab, construction safety and building methods.
  • Relevant domestic construction related experience or knowledge of regional construction industry practices.
  • Membership or ability to become a member in relevant professional organizations.
  • Familiarity with or understanding of Revit, SAGE, Relevant Estimating Software AutoDesk Navisworks, P6 and MS Project software.
  • Ability to protect and publish innovative products through patents, trademark, copyrights, and other forms of intellectual property.

The Jerome J. Lohr College of Engineering is one of eight colleges within South Dakota State University. The BS program in construction management is ABET accredited and is currently enjoying new and renovated facilities and strong ties to its regional constituents. The CM program within the Construction & Operations Management Department currently enrolls approximately 160 students. The COM department has 12 full-time faculty and a total enrollment of over 300 students in its two associate degree programs, four undergraduate degree programs and two graduate programs. 

As the state’s 1862 Morrill Act land-grant institution, the work of South Dakota State University is carried out on its main resident campus in Brookings, at sites in Sioux Falls, Pierre, Rapid City, and Aberdeen, and through Extension offices and Agricultural Experiment Station research sites across South Dakota.

Jackrabbits Athletics competes as an NCAA Division I member with membership in the Missouri Valley Football Conference, the Summit League and the Big XII for wrestling.

Brookings is home to approximately 24,000 residents and is located 60 miles north of Sioux Falls and 200 miles west of Minneapolis. Brookings is listed as an ideal community for families, students, young professionals and retirees, and is rated among the safest and most vibrant cities in South Dakota.

The Brookings Public School District educates approximately 3,300 K-12 students and ranks among the state’s highest academic achieving school districts. The district includes three elementary schools, an intermediate school for fourth and fifth grade, one middle school, and a high school.
