Job Description:

The trainee will be involved in forensic pathology case submissions to the laboratory, which includes autopsy, tissue trimming, histopathology, ancillary sample collection, data interpretation, report generation, and client communication. The trainee will have access to a fully-equipped veterinary diagnostic pathology laboratory and a forensic research laboratory. Scientific collaboration and publication are encouraged. Supervision from a board-certified veterinary pathologist and support from other experienced technical staff, board-certified veterinarians, and forensic experts will be provided. Forensic training will include primary veterinary casework and a few human cases (entomology and osteology/anthropology). Training in forensic entomology will be provided including basic principles of forensic entomology and specimen collection. A small percentage of time will be dedicated to veterinary diagnostic imaging. The fellow will be required to attend trials in session in local courts and will be required to assist with and/or observe scene investigations as part of this program.

A research project will be a part of the program, with a manuscript to be submitted for publication before the end of the training program. The trainee will also present at a college wide seminar.

The trainee is given the opportunity to attend a busy schedule of journal clubs and rounds. This schedule helps maintain and increase the fellow’s knowledge in general pathology and forensic pathology.

The forensic pathology service participates in two clinical rotations: Veterinary Forensic Science Clerkship (summer) and Diagnostic Pathology Clerkship in Shelter Medicine (Spring, Summer, Fall). The trainee will assist with case management and teaching veterinary student on these rotations.

The trainee will assist faculty with organizing and teaching at continuing education courses. Attendees can include law enforcement officers, veterinarians, attorneys, and other interested stakeholders.

The trainee will be required to keep a case log with the cases she/he was involved with during the training period. The Veterinary Forensic Pathology Service serves the university and community by providing veterinary forensic autopsy services and scene response for cases of suspected neglect and animal cruelty. The service also evaluates animal deaths under suspicious circumstances and horse racing fatalities.

The goals of the program are to familiarize the trainee to all aspects of veterinary forensic science with a strong emphasis in the veterinary forensic autopsy. The fellow will interact with multiple forensic scientists, law enforcement, attorneys, ACVP Anatomic Pathologists, and ACVR Radiologists throughout their training.

Distribution of weeks:

This 1-year program insures a minimum of 25 weeks of direct supervision working with an ACVP Anatomic Pathology Diplomate evaluating patients and instruction of veterinary residents and students. The trainee will participate in on-call duties for the Forensic Pathology Service. Time will be spent rotating through other services including radiology, forensic entomology, and DNA analysis. The trainee will participate in and/or observe the processing of crime scenes and will be required to attend criminal trials or hearings. The trainee’s remaining time will be spent in research, vacation, and continuing education.

This is a non-tenure accruing position.

Expected Salary:

Salary will be commensurate with the applicant’s qualifications and experience.

Minimum Requirements:

The requirements for applicants are a DVM, successful completion of a 3-year Anatomic Pathology Residency Program, and have passed Phase I of the ACVP certification examination.
