JOB SUMMARY

The Director provides philosophical, visionary, administrative, budgetary and programmatic leadership for the Hedgeman Center for Student Diversity Initiatives and Programs, provides assistance in helping the university community develop student development experiences and opportunities that help prepare students to contribute, prosper and succeed in a diverse and changing world.

The Director of the Hedgeman Center is responsible for creating programs, initiatives, services, partnerships and collaborations that assist, support and empower students regarding issues of multiculturalism, diversity and community with particular attention to students of color, first-generation college students and other diverse student populations.

The Director provides assistance and leadership in programming related to university diversity and inclusion efforts, including building strategic linkages to university curricular and co-curricular diversity initiatives, processes opportunities for members of the Hamline University community.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Supervision

  • Select, supervise, train, and evaluate professional staff (as necessary) and student staff. 

Student Programming and Support

  • Meet with and advise individual students in their transition to the university, as well as those experiencing academic, social, cultural or other forms of difficulties and those who are referred or seeking assistance.

  • Develop and coordinate the planning process for initiatives and services that support the matriculation, engagement, success and retention of students of color and first-generation college students, particularly in the areas of mentoring, belonging and navigating the university community, issues, opportunities, resources and experiences, including:

    • Quartering programming for Student Transition and Empowerment Program Series (STEPS)

    • The annual Hedgeman Center Student Empowerment Retreat

    • Student Identity Circles

    • Student-to-Student Mentoring Program/activities

    • The annual Hedgeman Honors and Awards recognition event

Student Organization Advising

  • Advise the Multicultural Alliance, and coordinate and/or offer direct advising, assistance and support to individual Hedgeman Center student organizations, especially in relation to organizational dynamics, diversity and identity issues, programming and support networks. These organizations include the Asian Pacific American Coalition (APAC), Black Student Collective (BSC), FUSION, Hamline African Student Association (HASA), Indigenous Peoples Society (HIPS), Hamline Unidos (Unidos) and others.

  • Work in concert with student organizations to develop, coordinate and implement traditional heritage and cultural events, including Hispanic Heritage Month, African Heritage Month, Hmong Month, Native American Awareness Week, Black History Month, Asian Heritage Month and other similar events.

Campus Wide Diversity Programming

  • Coordinate the Multicultural Mosaic Pathway pre-orientation program.

  • Develop, coordinate and collaborate on diversity initiatives for the campus by implementing activities, programs and training opportunities that help students learn about diversity issues, communities, topics and cultures, including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration, Social Justice Symposium, student diversity training sessions, and other opportunities.

  • Develop, coordinate and/or collaborate on programs that increase student awareness, education, participation and leadership in campus and community diversity initiatives and issues.

  • Serve as a resource and consultant for student organizations, university departments and other entities interested in increasing awareness and education on diversity issues.

Committee Work

  • Serve on University- and division-wide committees that address issues related to student success, student development, diversity education and that support and/or address issues related to experiences of students of color and international students, including the Diversity Initiatives Steering Committee, First Generation Student Engagement Committee, First Year Student Advisory Committee, Early Alerts, and others standing and ad hoc committees.

Administration and Budget Management

  • Lead and oversee the department’s strategic planning process in concert with Student Affairs, and the university.

  • Oversee the financial management of the departmental budget.

  • Develop and revise publications and websites for the department.

  • Collaborates with other university departments regarding the development and enforcement of policies related to student diversity, equity and inclusion.

  • Facilitate the development of learning outcomes and assessment for programs and services of the office.

  • Represent and advocate for the department within the university administrative and governance structure and promote an environment that is responsive to student needs.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Ensure office compliance with applicable laws, including, but not limited to, Title IX, HEOA and FERPA; exercises best practices within regards to the maintenance of confidential student information.

  • Serve on university committees as needed.

  • All other duties as requested.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

This position reports to the:  Associate Dean of Students

This position may supervise 1 employee

This position supervises 3-5 student workers.

BUDGET MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES

This position is responsible for the following budget:  Hedgeman Center

Budget Range: $50,001-$100,000

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND KEY COMPETENCIES

  • Skills and abilities to provide philosophical, visionary, administrative, budgetary and programmatic leadership for the Hedgeman Center.

  • Ability to develop and coordinate the planning process for initiatives and services that support the matriculation, engagement, success and retention of students of color and first-generation college students.

  • Ability to recruit, select, train, supervise and evaluate the ongoing performance of department staff/student workers.

  • Strong collaboration skills.

  • Outstanding organization, planning skills, and excellent presentation and communication skills.

  • Experience and sensitivity working with students from diverse multicultural backgrounds.

MINIMUM EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/EXPECTATIONS

  • Master’s degree from an accredited college or university.

  • Five (5) years professional experience in a leadership or supervisory role.

  • Five (5) years professional experience developing events and programming related to students of color and first-generation college students.

  • Ability to work evenings and weekends.

PREFERRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/EXPECTATIONS

  • Five (5) years professional experience in roles with increasingly higher levels of responsibility within a higher education institution.

  • Five (5) plus years professional experience developing events and programming related to diversity.

  • Three (3) years professional experience in a budget management role.

WORKING CONDITIONS / EQUIPMENT

Must perform the following essential functions with or without a reasonable accommodation:

  • Must be able to work on a computer for extended periods of time.

  • Ability to travel to on and off campus locations.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

  • This is a full time exempt (.92 FTE) position, 11 months a year.

  • Evening and weekend work required.
