The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) welcomes applications and nominations for the position of Chair, Department of Biology (the Department). This is an exceptional opportunity for a world class scientist to lead a top science department at the premier academic and research institute in the State of Alabama. The new Chair will be expected to thoughtfully approach hiring of the next generation of faculty; continue to broaden and strengthen research and teaching in the department; nurturing a culture dedicated to teaching; further develop graduate education; and champion an equitable and inclusive environment for staff, faculty, and students alike.

The successful candidate will have a record of academic and administrative excellence, mentoring, scientific leadership, and research in the field of biology in a university setting, as well as an established record of commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. A doctoral degree in biology, or a closely related field, is required. Appointment at the full professor level is expected.

A key member of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), the Department of Biology is on the cusp of an exciting new chapter. In 2023 the Department will relocate to the newly developed, state-of-the-art Science and Engineering Complex on UAB campus. The move represents an opportunity to continue to nurture existing collaborations while expanding the breadth of interdisciplinary work across the Department, the College of Arts and Sciences, and the University. The Department has 25 full time faculty and eight adjunct faculty dedicated to research and teaching with broad scientific interests ranging from the molecular to the ecological level. The breadth faculty expertise drives diverse emphasis in cellular, molecular, developmental, environmental, and evolutionary biology, genetics and genomics, bioinformatics, healthy aging, marine, and organismal biology. UAB Biology faculty have been recognized by the University and by national and international biological organizations for their excellence in research and teaching.

One of the nation’s premier research universities, UAB is home to CAS, which includes 19 Departments and 5 Centers and Institutes. CAS has the largest undergraduate enrollment on the campus and is a central figure in the teaching and research landscape of the University. UAB includes one of the nation’s largest academic health science centers, comprised of the schools of medicine, dentistry, optometry, nursing, and public health, as well as UAB Health System—the third largest public hospital in the country. UAB ranks among the top 3% of US universities based on all federal research funding awarded. In 2021 UAB was recognized by Forbes as the best large employer in the country and America’s No. 4 best employer for diversity.

In September 2021, UAB received the 2021 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine.
