Department Summary
University Advancement (UA) supports the University of Oregon's (UO) mission of providing exceptional teaching, discovery, and service by strategically positioning the university to create awareness, build long-term relationships, and secure resources that increase understanding and further its aims. The Advancement Strategies and Technology Innovation (ASTI) team is charged with leading University Advancement's (Advancement) digital-first strategy, which has been identified as a division-wide priority. In partnership with Advancement, the University of Oregon Foundation (UOF), and the UO campus, ASTI will work to prioritize digital solutions to achieve innovative and agile business practices that support Advancement initiatives and focus on creating exceptional constituent experiences.
Position Summary
The Senior Director of Digital First Strategy is a dynamic position that will play a leadership role in developing and implementing a division-wide digital-first strategy. This individual will oversee a team of data and system experts, develop strong partnerships with the University of Oregon Foundation (UOF) and UO Central IT, and help transform Advancement's (Advancement) culture, usage, and approach to digital solutions. Focusing on data governance, technology eco-systems, improving the donor and alumni experience, and internal cultural adoption.
Advancement uses a robust ecosystem of technical solutions to house, process, and analyze constituent data, communicate with prospects, donors, and partners, track activity, and comply with legal standards around data processing and constituent consent.
The Senior Director is responsible for partnering with Advancement and UOF teams and solutions vendors to ensure that systems are secure and operational and is the lead person responsible for ensuring that systems are scoped, configured, managed, and monitored to fully support the needs of the department and the organization. This position will also be responsible for developing overall constituent data approaches, understanding system roadmaps, integrations, and releases, optimizing their use, and managing issue resolution.
This position can be located in Eugene or Portland, and is eligible for hybrid or remote work.
Minimum Requirements
- Seven years of experience within the technology and/or data
field.
AND any of the two following: - Bachelor's degree in data science, information management,
statistics, or related field.
- Experience in assessing, identifying, and implementing large
and small digital technology solutions.
- Experience in high-level, multi-faceted project
management.
- Two years of experience in professional staff
management.
- Experience providing training and educational experiences for
diverse audiences.
Professional Competencies
- Expertise in managing teams and projects with diverse
work/project loads.
- Understanding of fundraising, prospecting, events, engagement,
and stewardship to partner with Advancement colleagues to optimize
system capabilities.
- Ability to work with complex data, analyze trends, and report
and present information to leadership and stakeholders. Ability to
translate precise technical issues into simple, actionable
processes with non-technical colleagues, and vice-versa.
- Experience working with multiple complex databases and related
data fields; including Advance CRM or similar platform.
- Excellent organizational, problem-solving, and time management
skills.
- Demonstrated ability to manage stressful situations with tact
and diplomacy and to use sound judgment and initiative,
particularly as it relates to handling sensitive and/or
confidential information.
- Effective communication skills including, writing, editing,
attention to detail, and the ability to prepare reports, documents
policies, and procedures.
- In-depth knowledge of statistical methods, tests, and best
practices for data maintenance.
- Knowledge of industry standards regarding technology, business
processes, higher-ed fundraising common policies, and data quality
and gift processing best practices.
- Ability to prepare an annual budget, monitor expenses, and work
closely with colleagues in finance and contracting to manage
contracts.
- Ability to interact, communicate and work effectively with
individuals, recognizing and respecting the many and varied
identities of each person.
- Commitment to promoting and embracing diversity, equity, and
inclusion.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in leading (or playing a leadership role) in
implementing complex digital technology solutions within large
organizations.
- Demonstrated track record of establishing and growing
productive partnerships across organizations and within
industries.
- Experience in mapping processes, data flows, and documenting
policies/processes.
- Experience in providing consulting services to complex
organizations around technology, data, or process-related
strategies.
- Experience reviewing software, tech platforms, and/or other
products to improve, manage and effectively use data and conducting
needs assessment activities.
- Experience in indirect staff management and/or leading
organizational-wide initiatives.
