Department Summary

The Robert D. Clark Honors College (CHC) is a liberal arts honors college within the University of Oregon, an AAU Research 1 institution. Founded in 1960, it is one of the oldest public university honors colleges in the United States. The College features a curriculum that provides students a strong interdisciplinary foundation in the liberal arts, as well as the opportunity to design and teach innovative courses. CHC courses are typically run as seminars. They are writing-intensive and open only to honors college students. Courses are capped at 19 students, allowing for vibrant intellectual discussions, unique opportunities for pedagogical experimentation, and sustained faculty-student interaction.

The University of Oregon is located on Kalapuya Ilihi, the traditional indigenous homeland of the Kalapuya people. Following treaties between 1851 and 1855, Kalapuya people were dispossessed of their indigenous homeland by the United States government and forcibly removed to the Coast Reservation in Western Oregon. Today, Kalapuya descendants are primarily citizens of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde and the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians, and they continue to make important contributions to their communities, to the UO, to Oregon, and to the world.
Position Summary

The Clark Honors College (CHC), a dynamic and growing liberal arts honors college, invites applications for appointment as an ongoing career faculty member specializing in any area of the social sciences (including but not limited to fields such as anthropology, business, communication studies, economics, education, ethnic studies, geography, history, law, political science, and sociology). As core faculty members, CHC career faculty fully participate in College governance and have access to annual professional development funding and leadership opportunities. In their contributions to the CHC curriculum, the successful candidate will draw on scholarship, cultural production, perspectives, and voices from members of communities historically marginalized by legacies of inequality. They will teach courses that develop students' qualitative and/or quantitative analytical and reflective capacities to help them understand and ethically engage with the ongoing (cultural, economic, political, social, etc.) power imbalances that have shaped and continue to shape global cultures, including the United States.

This position could begin in winter, spring, or fall 2023, depending on candidate availability.

The standard course load for career faculty in the CHC is 7 courses or 2-3 CHC courses per term. Career faculty also have opportunities to teach 12-student Calderwood Seminars in Public Writing and courses in UO's Inside Out Program. Teaching positions in the CHC require student advising, service, and participation in honors college governance. Faculty are expected to help undergraduates navigate the thesis process, and they serve as CHC representatives on students' thesis committees. Career faculty receive annual professional development funding and can apply for teaching innovation grants. The successful applicant will teach courses in their area(s) of specialization in the social sciences as well as CHC required seminars. We especially encourage applicants with experience and/or training in equity and inclusion in the classroom and with teaching students from a variety of majors.
Minimum Requirements

  • Ability to work with students from diverse backgrounds, including majors from across campus

  • Ability to design and teach a diverse suite of courses that are both appealing and accessible to Honors College students from a broad range of majors in a liberal arts context
  • Experience with undergraduate advising and mentoring
  • Ability to contribute to the diversity of CHC disciplinary perspectives
