JOB SUMMARY

Reporting to the Director, Global Learner Support, the Global Learner Support Specialist provides language, cultural, and academic support to international and domestic students enrolled at the Regional Campus. The key responsibilities associated with this role include organizing and leading cultural programming, planning and delivering workshops, leading English language tutorials, teaching non-credit courses, recruiting staff and student volunteers to lead workshops and other student events, and publicizing student events. The Global Learner Support Specialist will collaborate as a member of the Regional Campus' student services team and will also work with colleagues at other locations in Northeastern's global campus network to ensure students have access, where appropriate, to programming originating on other campuses.

Some evening and weekend hours may be required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Strong organizational, analytical, and interpersonal communication skills (both verbal and written) are requried. Computer skills and experience in working with databases are required. Excellent skills in relationship building, professional presentation, and customer service are required. Ability to manage many tasks simultaneously, take initiative, follow through with projects, and work as an integral member of a team are key assets for this role. Demonstrate strong intercultural communication skills and be aware of issues pertaining to international students, including language needs, adjustment challenges and barriers, cultural differences, academic needs, and differences in educational systems. Knowledge and skills required for this position are normally obtained through a master's degree (preferred) and at least two years of experience providing student support to students in a higher education setting. Demonstrated experience working with international students and second language learners with a strong understanding of the distinct needs of these populations. English Language Teaching experience is required.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & ACCOUNTABILITIES

2) Lead and/or facilitate language, cultural, and academic support services on the Regional Campus, including:
  • GLS Tutoring (e.g. weekly tutoring sessions for individual and group conversations)
  • GLS Workshops
  • Cultural activities, including events designed to introduce students to the local culture and history of the Regional Campus
  • Communication in Tech
  • Non-credit courses (upon assessment of learner needs, offer course addressing identified needs; e.g. Academic Communication & Collaboration, Academic Writing, Career & Communication Development, etc.)
  • Cultural Exchange Program


Provide information regarding Global Learner Support (GLS) services and offerings at student events. Represent Global Learner Support at events for prospective students (e.g. open house events).

2) Serve as onsite manager of GLS with involvement in the following:
  • Scheduling of GLS services with campus operations
  • Collaborating and serving on Academic & Student Affairs, Global Campus Network Student Affairs, and Regional Wellness teams
  • Recruiting and supporting volunteer presenters
  • Serving on regional work groups
  • Representing GLS at team meetings


Collect student feedback related to GLS programming on the Regional Campus; Propose and implement changes on the basis of student feedback

Working with Marketing and Communications staff, ensure that GLS events—including events originating at other campuses—are widely publicized and accessible to students on the Regional Campus

Collaborate with GLS regional team on program development and professional growth opportunities
