Fabrication Lab Coordinator

The College of Design at Iowa State University is currently taking applications for a Fabrication Lab Coordinator to support architecture students and faculty by managing and maintaining the department's construction and fabrication resources.

The Computation + Construction Lab (CCL) / Architectural Fabrication Shop (AFS) is an initiative of the Department of Architecture which combines research, teaching, and outreach. ISU invites applications for a Lab Coordinator to support the growth and development of these program spaces, which house a growing collection of digital fabrication equipment and construction tools for studios, seminars, research, and design/build projects.  

The department seeks candidates with shop / fabrication lab management or staff experience and a demonstrated expertise in digital fabrication, manufacturing technologies, and construction processes. Preference will be given to applicants who can work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students in the development of new digital workflows, particularly in architectural robotics.

The position is a full-time, twelve-month appointment, to begin immediately. Compensation is competitive and commensurate with experience.

Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include: assisting with the day-to-day operations of the lab, overseeing student employees, evaluating, purchasing, and performing maintenance and equipment repairs; inventorying and purchasing equipment, tools and materials; overseeing lab safety and certification; instructs and trains, graduate assistants and student workers; holds training sessions for students and faculty, as required.

In addition, the lab coordinator will aid in the development of the research portfolio of the CCL and will have the opportunity to lead projects. Other responsibilities may be defined based on the candidate’s specific background and experience.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Architecture or a design field.
  • Experience working in digital fabrication
  • Preference is for a Master of Architecture or a Master of Science in a related field such as industrial design, digital fabrication, or computational design.
