Animal Biologists, Assistant Professors (Two Positions)
The Department of Biology at Coastal Carolina University invites applications for two full-time tenure-track Animal Biologists to begin in August 2023. Candidates can study animals at any level of biological organization, from genes to populations. We seek individuals whose expertise complements current faculty expertise and can include, but is not limited to conservation genetics, functional morphology, evolution, mammalogy, population dynamics, and parasitology. Successful candidates will be able to work with students from a diversity of backgrounds and thrive within Coastal Carolina University’s teacher-scholar model that emphasizes high quality teaching, engaged learning, and faculty research. Individuals selected for these positions will be expected to develop active research programs involving undergraduate students, and will be encouraged to participate in the interdisciplinary Coastal, Marine, and Wetland Studies M.S. program.
Both positions will have responsibilities teaching introductory biology, and between the two hires, the department aims to add capacity to teach Evolution, Vertebrate and/or Invertebrate Zoology, and Comparative Vertebrate Anatomy. Additionally, the hires will have the opportunity to develop specialized advanced courses and engage with other components of the Department of Biology curriculum. Candidates must have a Ph.D.; prior teaching and post-doctoral experience is desirable.
The Biology Department has about 500 undergraduates, and 24 full-time faculty. Undergraduate students earn a B.S. degree with a specialization in one of the following: (1) Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, and Genetics, (2) Evolution, Ecology, and Conservation, or (3) Integrative Biology. Pending approval, we will also begin offering a B.S. in Biology Education to meet the educational needs of our rapidly growing region. Faculty in the department have diverse research interests and participate in NIH’s South Carolina IDeA Networks of Biomedical Research Excellence (SC- INBRE ). Faculty also collaborate with state and federal resource agencies and have access to several natural areas for field research and teaching including coastal barrier islands (Waties Island), Waccamaw National Wildlife Refuge, Lewis Ocean Bay Heritage Preserve, as well as numerous other large federal and state properties within 2 hours of campus. The Department of Biology is part of the Gupta College of Science which houses 7 departments, in new and renovated instructional facilities and research labs. For more departmental information visit: http://www.coastal.edu/biology.
Interested candidates should submit a letter of application, curriculum vitae, statements of teaching and research goals and the contact information for at least three professional references, electronically at http://jobs.coastal.edu.
