Position Purpose

The Chief Human Resources Officer (“CHRO”) reports to Richard Mills, Executive Vice President for Finance and Administration, and oversees the Office of Human Resources. The CHRO oversees organization and talent development, compensation, benefits, performance management, talent acquisition, labor relations, and other HR functions. Dartmouth employs more than 4,000 people, of which approximately 1,000 are faculty members and 3,000 are staff members. Of the staff members, approximately 450 are unionized.

Reporting directly to the CHRO are the Executive Director of Human Resource Services and the Executive Director of Total Rewards. The Office includes approximately 40 staff members, as shown in the organizational chart below: https://www.dartmouth.edu/hr/docs/about/hrorgchart.pdf

The CHRO serves in a critical leadership role at Dartmouth. This position supports the advancement, building, and sustaining of a robust organization and culture in which staff are prepared and motivated to tackle the challenges facing higher education and the opportunities for the workforce in the postpandemic future. In a fast-paced environment, the CHRO will strengthen the human resources infrastructure in a financially responsible manner while supporting and advising the senior leadership team on building a distinctive culture of engagement, excellence, inclusion, and innovation for the future at Dartmouth.

The CHRO will join Dartmouth at an exciting time of leadership change. The HR team is client focused, collaborative, experienced, committed, and hard-working. This new leader will engage with clients, staff, faculty and senior leadership to build an HR organization that is inspired by Dartmouth’s mission. The CHRO will have the knowledge, experience, emotional intelligence, and desire to lead HR forward.

Dartmouth
Founded in 1769 and located in Hanover, New Hampshire, Dartmouth is defined by comprehensive liberal arts education combined with focused graduate programs in medicine, business, the sciences, and engineering. A founding member of the Ivy League, Dartmouth is consistently ranked among the country’s best research institutions. In U.S. News and World Report’s “Best Colleges 2022” Dartmouth was ranked 13th among national universities and number five for faculty commitment to undergraduate teaching. It educates over 4,500 undergraduates and 2,100 graduate students in the Arts & Sciences and in its four graduate and professional schools: the Geisel School of Medicine, the Guarini School of Graduate and Advanced Studies, the Thayer School of Engineering, and the Tuck School of Business. With strong graduate programs and a deep commitment to research, Dartmouth is a research university and yet in size and commitment to transformative teaching also remains a college.

Dartmouth has a profound sense of place. From the Connecticut River to the Green Mountains to the west and the White Mountains to the north, Dartmouth’s physical location leaves a mark on all who study and work there. Among Dartmouth’s greatest assets is its beautiful, historic campus anchored by Baker-Berry Library. The central campus consists of 269 acres and encompasses 6.5 million gross square feet in 161 buildings, ranging from housing to specialized laboratories, gymnasiums, high-tech classrooms, playing fields, and libraries.

The undergraduate college offers a four-year program in the liberal arts with more than 50 academic departments. This year Dartmouth received a record number of applications, up 33 percent from last year, and the admissions process is extremely selective with an acceptance rate of just over six percent and a record yield rate of 71 percent for the incoming Class of 2025. The student body is evenly divided between men and women, with 38 percent of undergraduate students identifying as students of color and thirteen percent as international. After a recent major gift, Dartmouth is able to practice need-blind admissions for international students. Dartmouth is fully committed to the principles of access and affordability and guarantees to meet 100 percent of students’ demonstrated need throughout their undergraduate years. Moreover, approximately 45 percent of the undergraduate student body received need-based scholarships, totaling more than $100 million for FY21.

A year-round academic calendar and flexible enrollment plan provide many opportunities for study abroad and off-campus experiences. Prior to the pandemic, more 50 percent of undergraduate students participated in one or more of the greater than 40 off-campus programs led by Dartmouth faculty in approximately 30 countries around the world. More than 20 percent of students participate in intercollegiate athletics at the NCAA Division I level, an experience that plays an important role in the development of many Dartmouth students.

Since 1885, when Dartmouth awarded its first PhD, graduate studies at Dartmouth have combined world-class research facilities with an outstanding faculty. The Guarini School of Graduate and Advanced Studies, formed in 2016, awards all PhD, MS, and MA degrees across a broad range of programs, including several interdisciplinary and doctoral programs connected to the professional schools. Guarini is home to 820 graduate students.

The Geisel School of Medicine is the nation’s fourth-oldest medical school, includes clinical and basic science departments, and draws on the resources of Dartmouth and its affiliated teaching hospitals. In addition to the MD degree (380 students), Geisel enrolls 140 graduate students in biomedical sciences, public health, and healthcare delivery science.

One of the oldest professional schools of engineering in the country, the Thayer School of Engineering features a single unified department of engineering sciences. Thayer administers both the undergraduate Bachelor of Arts degree in engineering sciences and the Bachelor of Engineering degree as well as enrolls 220 graduate students at the master’s and doctoral levels.

Founded in 1900 as the first graduate school of management, the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth has long been recognized as a top-ten business school and enrolls 580 MBA students. The Tuck School is distinguished by its personalized education and a rigorous self-analytical approach to leadership development.

Prudent financial leadership and management ensure that Dartmouth’s resource base remains stable and sustainable for the future. In FY21, Dartmouth had $1.03 billion in operating expenses, and the endowment stands at more than $8 billion. The organizational structure mirrors the budget model. The graduate and professional schools operate as their own independent financial units, with the deans responsible for revenues and costs, with a tax back to central administration for shared resources. The Arts & Sciences budget is part of the central university budget.

In April 2018, under President Philip J. Hanlon , Dartmouth announced the public launch of a major capital campaign. The Call to Lead: A Campaign for Dartmouth will conclude in June 2023 at the end of President Hanlon’s tenure and will have advanced Dartmouth’s distinctive liberal arts experience, underwritten discoveries that improve the human condition, and contributed to a variety of extracurricular experiences that prepare students for lives of leadership. Although Dartmouth reached its overall fundraising target of $3 billion with gifts totaling more than $3.25 billion from more than 92,000 donors to date, plans are to continue to surpass the goal to the end of the campaign.

In July 2022, Dr. Sian Beilock , President of Barnard College and a cognitive scientist, was announced as Dartmouth’s 19th and first female President. Dr. Beilock will assume office in July 2023.

Key Accountabilities

Description

The CHRO will provide strong and effective leadership setting vision, goals, and priorities for the Office of Human Resources.

In additional to the day-to-day responsibilities of running the Office of Human Resources, the CHRO will have these responsibilities:
  • Advise and collaborate with the Executive Vice President and other members of the senior leadership team on issues related to people and culture with professionalism and courage;
  • Support the HR team in modeling client service, performance, and responsiveness;
  • Ensure institutional compliance with HR-related legal and contractual requirements;
  • Participate in a smooth implementation of a new HR enterprise management system;
  • Support the data-driven enhancement of Dartmouth’s total rewards framework to better attract, develop, retain, motivate, and engage a diverse and talented workforce;
  • Develop HR budget to ensure that resource allocations reflect organizational priorities and empower direct reports to work independently;
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement, extraordinary talent, and meaningful work;
  • Collaborate with critical stakeholders to enhance and create programs that support the wellbeing of all;
  • In partnership with the Office of Institutional Diversity and Equity (“IDE”), promote the mission and goals of Dartmouth as a strategic imperative, ensure that all HR activities are conducted with an equity lens, and address gaps;
  • Assess the Office’s communications strategies and modify as needed to facilitate the effective sharing of information within the Dartmouth community;
  • Facilitate union negotiations and otherwise enhance positive labor relations with both unionized and nonunionized staff;
  • Encourage innovation through organizational redesign, technology, and flexible working arrangements to attract and retain talented employees;
  • Ensure that the performance management process encourages staff development and advancement;
  • Participate in meetings as appropriate to update on relevant HR issues and staff the Compensation Committee;
  • Assess HR policies to ensure clarity, relevance, and a progressive workplace culture; and
  • Support senior level searches and partner with search firms as appropriate.
