ATTENTION:

The department of Career Services at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater seeks a Career Advisor.



Academic staff positions are provided fixed term appointments with annual renewals unless otherwise noted. Reappointment for subsequent terms is dependent upon performance, university funding and external forces.

JOB DETAILS:

The Career Advisor A&C provides career advising to students and alumni of the College of Arts & Communication to foster the career development needs of all A&C majors, and builds collaborative relationships with College administration, faculty, advisors, internship coordinators, and employers desiring to hire graduates of academic programs within the college. Remote work negotiable (maximum of 2 times per week) at an offsite, non-campus work location.



QUALIFICATIONS:

Required Qualifications:

· Bachelor’s degree.

· Experience (employment, assistantship, internship, etc.) working in a service, advisory or supervisory role.

· Evidence of ability to establish positive relationships with diverse populations.

Desired Characteristics:

· Master’s degree in Higher Education Leadership, Communication, Fine Arts, Student Personnel Administration, Counseling, Psychology, Human Resources, Social Work, Education, or related field.

· The ideal candidate must be capable of presenting to students about a variety of career-related topics.

· A strong working knowledge of various student development needs and theories is a fundamental foundation for this position.

· The ideal candidate is someone adept at creating and maintaining positive work relationships with a wide variety of students, faculty, staff, and employers.

· The ability to work across organizational boundaries in a collaborative manner to enhance student learning is a critical requirement for this position.

· Willingness and ability to be an active participant in following applicable safety rules and regulations including necessary training and drills.

· Ability to interact respectfully with people from diverse socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.



RESPONSIBILITIES:

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:

70% Serve as the Career Advisor for the College of Arts & Communication

· Provide individual career advising for A&C students and alumni. Meet in-person or virtually as needed in order to:

o guide students through the various A&C career paths available to them;

o help students determine their initial career path post-graduation;

o teach students how to conduct an effective, self-directed job/internship search;

o enable students to be self-directed in their career development journey.

· Establish productive relationships with A&C students, administration, faculty and staff. Meet as needed with College administration, academic department chairs, internship coordinators, academic advisor(s), and faculty. Collaborate with A&C stakeholders to develop and implement career development initiatives and interventions that work for students in A&C targeted majors.

· Attend scheduled semester advising events (e.g., COMM Group Advising) to better engage a broader range of students.

· Establish productive relationships with student organizations and student groups within the College to promote career advising and services.

· Assist faculty as needed/requested to incorporate career education/activities in their course requirements, and give career-related presentations to classes as needed. Organize and implement career development programming as desired by faculty and students.

· Serve as an expert and continually research career paths for A&C majors/graduates, helping students know their career options with A&C majors and career paths.

· Serve as a contributor of resources for the instructor of ACINDP 399, a 1 credit Career Information course for A&C majors. (Individual with a master's degree would be eligible to co-teach or teach the course.)

15% Employer Outreach and Relationship Management

· Create and maintain relationships with employers who hire A&C students/graduates for internships and professional positions. Identify and reach out to employers in all sectors to invite to engage with our students at career fairs and other networking events.

10% Serve as a liaison to the College of Integrated Studies at UWW at Rock County

· Establish liaison relationship with staff at the UWW Rock County campus for the purpose of connecting students at the branch campus with needed career development support.

· Offer virtual office hours for UWW Rock County campus, to be determined in consultation with staff at the branch campus and approved by departmental supervisors.

5% Coordinate campus-wide career programming, including:

· Assist other departmental staff with planning and implementing the Fall and Spring Hawk Career Fairs, as well as additional programs and events organized by Career Services and the College of Arts & Communication.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

Well-qualified candidates can expect a starting annual salary within a range of $44,000 – $49,000.
