Job Description:

The Athletic Communication and Sports Management Intern reports to the Director of Athletic Communications at Washington and Lee University. This paid internship position will assist with coverage for Washington and Lee University’s 24 sports and serve as primary contact for the Generals baseball team during the 2023 spring season. University housing may be available to rent upon request.

About Washington and Lee University:
Located in Lexington, Va., W&L participates in NCAA Division III competition and is a member of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. The private and liberal arts experience allows students to pursue athletic excellence without sacrificing their educational experience. W&L offers 24 varsity sports and combined for a .738 winning percentage and 11 conference championships during the 2021-22 school year. The Generals ranked No. 12 in the NACDA Director’s Cup standings with 767.5 points this past year, the best finish in department history. Twenty-six student-athletes garnered All-America honors and tallied 21 major conference awards last year. W&L’s varsity teams are nationally ranked in several sports with NCAA Tournament aspirations. Washington and Lee historically hosts a handful of NCAA Tournament competitions in early rounds of bracket play including field hockey, men’s soccer, men’s and women’s tennis, and men’s and women’s lacrosse annually. The W&L communications staff also plays a large hand in the operation of ODAC tournament contests and NCAA regional and national events sponsored by the Old Dominion Athletic Conference and the city of Salem, Va. The intern will be able to gain a wide variety of experiences in collegiate athletics throughout the semester. Essential and Related Functions:
  • Serve as the primary media contact for Washington and Lee Baseball.
  • Provide all sports information functions including maintaining records and in-game statistics, producing digital programs, and writing press releases and game stories.
  • Assist in the various conference award nomination process and handle general media and public information requests.
  • Assist in game day operations and staffing for all intercollegiate athletic events on W&L’s campus, including statistics, scoreboards, scorekeepers, music, and public address.
  • Assist in providing website maintenance and the department’s social media efforts.
  • Help provide oversight of gameday student workers and assistants.
Work Schedule: This is a part-time role without benefits. The work schedule is based on departmental needs. The anticipated schedule is 25 hours per week with mandatory weekends and nights from December 2022 and will conclude on May 30, 2023.

Minimum Pay: $18.00/ hour

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Possess or be actively enrolled in a degree program for communications, sports management, journalism, or a related area of study.
  • Possess a working knowledge of intercollegiate athletics, specific playing rules, NCAA regulations, and scoring standards.
  • Possess strong time management and organizational skills with an ability to work independently.
  • Be self-motivated, and energetic, and possesses the ability to manage several projects at once.
  • Possess strong oral and written interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Be available to work nights and weekends.
