Mission or Goal of Unit
The mission of the Division of Transplant Surgery is to provide excellence in clinical care, the advancement of science through research, and the training of undergraduate and graduate students in our discipline. The Department fosters a level of professional activity essential to the graduate and to the professional growth of the faculty. The Division provides junior faculty with clinical and research experiences that prepare them for their professional careers. The Hume-Lee Transplant Center at the Virginia Commonwealth University Health System is actively recruiting for a full-time transplant surgeon to lead the Kidney Transplant Program. This position is a collateral/term, non-tenure track faculty position in the area of Transplant Surgery and will serve as the Kidney Transplant Surgical Director. As the Kidney Transplant Surgical Director, this position is responsible for the ongoing development and growth of Hume-Lee Transplant’s kidney transplant program in collaboration with Transplant Center and hospital leadership. The faculty member will also support the division with teaching responsibilities at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Position Responsibilities
Teaching
Faculty member will have teaching responsibilities in all areas of Transplant Surgery and applied anatomy and physiology.

Research
Faculty member will assist in ongoing research and clinical trials as appropriate. He/she expected to develop interdisciplinary collaborations to enhance the research program in Transplant Surgery at VCU . In addition, he/she will mentor undergraduate and graduate students, as well as junior faculty.

Service
Faculty member will serve on departmental and hospital committees as assigned and participate in regional and national professional organizations.

Clinical
Faculty member clinical responsibility will be in the care of the transplant patients on the MCV and community campuses of VCU . He/she will be responsible for the development of an active surgical practice in transplantation, with the support of the Division and Department’s leadership.

Kidney Transplant Surgical Director
The Kidney Transplant Surgical Director is responsible for the ongoing development and growth of Hume-Lee Transplant’s kidney transplant program in collaboration with Transplant Center and hospital leadership. The Surgical Director must be able to demonstrate effective leadership skills and work with key multi-disciplinary personnel in order to enhance the kidney transplant program at VCU Health. Required Qualifications
  • Board Certified in General Surgery, Urology, or foreign equivalent with successful completion of ASTS Kidney Transplant fellowship

  • Over 5 years’ clinical experience in deceased & living kidney transplantation

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective interpersonal relationships and a history of positive and collaborative relations with colleagues, staff, patients, and families

  • Ability to accept and implement change

  • Ability to critically think to make effective decisions

  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU

  • Administrative and management experience
Preferred Qualifications
  • Teaching experience at the undergraduate or graduate level in transplant or a related discipline

  • Record of external funding or proposal submissions to obtain funding

  • Innovation in solid organ transplant
