Brief Description of Duties

The Student Recruitment and Academic Advising Specialist for CAUSES reports directly to the Associate Dean for Academic Programs. The incumbent is responsible for coordinating, planning and executing all undergraduate and graduate recruitment and advising-related activities for all CAUSES academic programs, including the RN-BSN Nursing program. The incumbent will help streamline and advance the nursing program student enrollment with the goal of increasing admissions to the nursing program each academic semester.

The Student Recruitment and Academic Advising Specialist will work closely with new, continuing, and non-degree students regarding their academic, professional and career goals. The incumbent will also provide guidance on issues that affect academic performance and monitors academic progress of students.

The position requires a high level of interaction with the Dean, Associate Deans, Department Chairs, faculty, staff and other campus and external constituencies, including the Office of Student Success.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Act as the Liaison between the University, student prospects, and continuing students and university faculty and staff via direct interactions and interfaces with relevant software systems.
  • Reviews student admission packets for the faculty admission committee (especially Nursing); prepares accepted student notification and information packets; organizes new student orientation; and maintains and updates admitted student data through enrollment.
  • Provides career and academic counseling, planning, and advising to all CAUSES students using specific knowledge on the university and college educational programs and degree options.
  • Develops and maintain partnerships and/or affiliate agreements between the college and local schools/colleges, alumni networks, faculty, community partners, and other identified groups.
  • Participates in recruitment and related outreach events; coordinate event-specific organizational aspects, promotional materials, and information from the college programs (which may require some evenings and weekend work).
  • Prepares accurate, timely, clear, quality reports on nursing student admission, advising, registration, and recruitment efforts.
Minimum Job Requirement
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
  • Some recruitment experience or the ability to perform these duties with minimal direct supervision.
  • Candidate must have strong interpersonal skills and excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • A minimum of one year of relevant experience.

Visa Sponsorship: At this time, the University of the District of Columbia does not provide sponsorship for visas (e.g. H-1B). This position is also ineligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT).

Residency Preference: A person applying for a position who is a bona fide District resident at the time of application for the position, may be awarded a 10-point residency preference over non-District applicants, unless the person declines the preference points. If selected, the person shall be required to present no less than 8 proofs of bona fide District residency on or before the effective date of the appointment and maintain such residency for 7 consecutive years from the effective date of the appointment. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the 7-year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation. The determination of a 'satisfactory background investigation' is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia. The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
