Brief Description of Duties

The University of the District of Columbia, College of Arts and Sciences, Division of Education, Health and Social Work invites applications for a full-time faculty appointment in Social Work with a start date of August 2023.The University of the District of Columbia is a public, comprehensive university with an urban land-grant distinction. It is the District of Columbia’s only public institution of higher education. It is a minority serving institution and serves approximately 4,000 students across its two-year, baccalaureate, masters, and professional programs. The Washington metropolitan community provides an exceptional learning laboratory for faculty, staff, and students.

The faculty member will teach undergraduate courses that include knowledge and skills in application of Social Welfare Policy and Approaches to Group work content in preparation of the social work generalist; advises and mentors students, and provides leadership for collaborative research activities that include student participation. The faculty member is expected to participate in program, department, college and university service activities and create community based service and experiential learning related experiences for students. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Teach professional foundation curriculum in the areas of mezzo and macro level practice, specifically policy and group work application in the context of generalist social work practice.
  • Participate in development of curriculum for an MSW curriculum including preparation of syllabi.
  • Develop and sustain an agenda of scholarship.
  • Develop model syllabi for assigned courses.
  • Serve as lead faculty for assigned areas in the professional foundation curriculum.
  • Advise and mentor social work students on matters of academic and career success.
  • Provide leadership for selected Social Work Program committees and activities.
  • Work collaboratively in the conduct of research that includes opportunities for student participation.
  • Serve as an advisor to 30 + social work majors.
  • Participate in the continuing review of program outcomes,
  • Other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Job Requirements
  • Master’s degree in social work from a Council on Social Work Education-accredited institution
  • A DSW or PhD in social work or a closely related field.
  • Have a minimum 2-year record of post master’s practice
  • Have undergraduate and graduate social work teaching experience
  • Have demonstrated experience with scholarly production including practice related research
  • Experience in curriculum design and development including utilization of experiential teaching methods
  • Experience in the CSWE accreditation/reaffirmation process
  • Applicant is expected to have a license social work license in the District of Columbia or is expected to obtain a license in the District of Columbia within two years of their hire date.
A candidate for appointment to the rank of Assistant Professor shall be required to meet the following qualifications:

  1. An appropriate terminal degree or agree to complete this degree within a period of time to be specified in the terms of the initial contract; and
  2. At least three (3) years of full-time teaching experience, including two (2) years in an institution of higher education.


Appropriate professional experience and achievements may be substituted when formal teaching experience is limited or absent.

When formal teaching experience is limited or absent, the candidate shall be required to demonstrate verifiable potential for effective teaching.

Collective Bargaining Unit (Union): This position is in the collective bargaining unit represented by National Education Association (NEA) and you may be required to pay an agency service fee through direct payroll deduction.

Visa Sponsorship: At this time, the University of the District of Columbia does not provide sponsorship for visas (e.g. H-1B ). This position is also ineligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT).

Residency Preference: A person applying for a position who is a bona fide District resident at the time of application for the position, may be awarded a 10-point residency preference over non-District applicants, unless the person declines the preference points. If selected, the person shall be required to present no less than 8 proofs of bona fide District residency on or before the effective date of the appointment and maintain such residency for 7 consecutive years from the effective date of the appointment. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the 7-year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation. The determination of a 'satisfactory background investigation' is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia. The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
